Taylor, George (1823 - 1873)

Mr. George Taylor, who has been a resident of Greenwood, Clark County the past year, met a most horrible death at James Syth's place, near Huntzicker's Hotel, last Tuesday morning. He had been digging a well there, and on going to work that morning he discovered foul air in the bottom. After employing the usual means for its removal he ascended into the well, then about 38 feet deep, and attaching the bucket to the rope called to the men at the windlass to haul him up as fast as possible. They complied and when they got him up about 20 feet, he let go his hold on the rope and fell slowly backwards out of the bucket. He reached the rocky bottom head first, and was heard breathing for ten or fifteen minutes afterwards, though his skull when the body was recovered, was found to be completely crushed. Owing to the absence of anything adapted to the purpose, the body was not recovered until that afternoon. It was then drawn out by a pair of ice tongs obtained at Greenwood.

Mr. Taylor was over fifty years of age, a stone mason by trade, who came from Canada to this county about a year ago. He will be remembered here by some as the man who laid the foundation for Dewhurst Hutchinson's vault. He was a quiet, industrious man, an exhorter in the Methodist church, in which capacity he has for some time held services in the Greenwood school house, in the absence of the minister. He leaves no family, his wife having died just previous to his leaving Canada. The only relatives he has are two brothers, one in England and the other in New Zealand.
