Wallace, Henry (22 June 1881 - 18 March 1966)

 

Funeral services were held Monday from the Georgas Funeral Home for Henry Wallace, 84, of Neillsville.  The Rev. Oscar Nichols of the Methodist Church officiated.  Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.  Mr. Wallace died Friday in Neillsville following a long illness.

 

He was born June 22, 1881, in Readstown, Vernon County. When he was nine years old his family moved to Jamestown, N. D., later moving to La Farge; and in 1892 the family moved to the Town of Washburn.  He attended the Cannonville School and later took over the operation of his father’s sawmill in Washburn.

 

After his marriage to Irene Hohenstein on December 15, 1904, they operated a hotel in Marshfield known as the Thomas House. They later returned to the Town of Washburn to continue in the sawmill business. In 1909, they moved to Neillsville, where they maintained a home until 1947.

 

Mr. Wallace worked as a carpenter and did building construction work in Alma Center, McDill, Thiensville, Oshkosh and Menasha.  He also assisted in building the dam at Hatfield.  He worked in various cities in Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida as a millwright in canning factories, and worked at the Badger Ordnance in Baraboo for four years.  He was one of those who dismantled the Rowlands Canning Factory in Neillsville.  He and his brother, Darwin, operated a gravel and sand pit in the Town of Levis for several years.

 

In 1947, the Wallace family moved from Neillsville back to the Town of Washburn, where they lived until 1958, moving back to Neillsville at that time.  He served as assessor for the Town of Washburn several years.

 

He was a member of the Neillsville Methodist Church and had been an Odd Fellow member since 1902.  His wife died in 1958.

 

He is survived by a son, Theodore Wallace of Milwaukee; and a daughter, Mrs. Wilbert (Ann) Wischulke of Granton.  Other survivors are seven grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Darwin and Lawrence of Stevens Point, and Dan of Hollywood, Fla.; and two sisters, Mrs. William (Pearl) Machel and Mrs. Ernest (Lilly) Higgens of Phoenix, Ariz.

 

Pallbearers were: Arthur Carl, Robert Frantz, Rollie Benedict, George Shaw, Olaf Amundson and Horace Rodman.  Graveside rites were conducted by Nordahl Fristad of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

 

"Face to Face" and "Have Tine Own Way Lord" were sung by Mrs. Glenn Lazotte and Miss Linda Lazotte, accompanied by Mrs. Jas. A. Musil.
