Harry was born April 4, 1916, in Lublin, the son of Steven & Katherine (Niec) Shewczyk. He grew up in Lublin and attended area rural schools. On June 4, 1939, he was united in marriage to Magdalene Komanec in Lublin at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church. The couple resided in Lublin for three years with Harry being a bar owner. He was also a member of the Gilman Lions Club, a co-founder of the Gilman Credit Union and a member of the Gilman Community Betterment Association.
In his younger years, he was an avid archer and helped to establish the Chequamegon Bow Hunters Club. Loving the outdoors, Harry also fished, hunted and golfed. He took pride in gardening and working in the yard, roses being his favorite flowers.
