Krause, Carl (Burned - 6 APR 1917)

Carl Krause, a farmer living two miles south of here (Granton, Clark Co., Wis.), was terribly burned about his left side last Friday evening while boiling sap in the woods near his home. He was in a neighboring town transacting business on that day and about supper time made himself busy in the sugar bush. Not returning home for supper, two of his sons went in search of him. When nearing a wood pile they noticed smoke arising from the ground and upon investigation discovered their father lying there asleep with his clothes partly burned from his body. They made haste to extinguish the smoldering fire in his clothes and have him removed to the house. Dr. Rath, who was called the next morning to attend the man, found that his left side, from the shoulder to the hip, was frightfully burned and it will no doubt be necessary to remove the greater part of the flesh and skin from the burned portion. Mr. Krause is confined to his bed and according to reports will remain there for some time. Just how his clothes caught fire is not known, as he is unable to explain that part himself, but it is presumed that he came in contact with the fire under the sap pan, or it was caused through a spark from his pipe.
