DEATH OF MRS. GARRET HOFTIEZER ON APRIL, 30

Mr. and Mrs. Sherwin Hoftiezer and daughters, Helen and Marjory, returned home Tuesday from Castewood, S. D. where they were called to attend the funeral of Mr. Hoftiezer’s mother.  Mrs. Hoftiezer died during a tornado which struck Castlewood Thursday evening, April 30 and which demolished the Hoftiezer home.  Mrs. Hoftiezer is believed to have died from shock.  All of spencer extends sympathy to the bereaved family.

Mrs. Garrett Hoftiezer, Sr., was born Johanna Duenk, at Alto, Wisconsin, April 1, 1865 and was united in marriage to Garrett Hoftiezer, Sr. on April 27, 1888.  In 1894 Mr. and Mrs. Hoftiezer moved to South Dakota with their family and settled on a farm in Hamlin county.  In 1929 they retired from the farm and moved to Castlewood where they lived until the storm of last Thursday evening.  Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hoftiezer, a son, John, preceded the mother in death.  Surviving are her husband and seven children, Mrs. Mabel Goldhorn, Mrs. Bernice Woertink, Mrs. Eliza Mulder and George Hoftiezer, all of Castlewood; Sherwin Hoftiezer of Spencer; Mrs. Ethel Smith of Laurel, Neb. and Mrs. Gertrude Konold of Watertown, S. D., also thirteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and one sister of Waupun, Wis.

The high esteem in which Mrs. Hoftiezer was held in her community is told in simple rhyme by Mrs. Ina Cramer, formerly of Spencer, now of Castlewood, S. D.:

            A silver haired lady

            Pass quietly on,
