William S. Tufts

Mr. Tufts is a native of Wisconsin, having been born in Manitowoc in 1852. Moved to Green Bay, where he was married in the 1873. He came to Clark County three years later, and to Withee, his present location, in 1878. He has since been engaged in lumbering, farming and in the mercantile business. He came here with no property whatever. He now owns and operates a large general store in the Village of Withee. He owns the Withee Hotel, a farmnear the village, two village lots, 1360 acres of timber land in this county, 400 acres in Taylor county, and city lots in West Superior which are valued at $5,000. He is postmaster at Withee, and has represented his town on the county board. Mr. Tufts is yet a young man, and his success but shows what may be accomplished in this part of the country, by energy and strict attention to business.

General Store & Post Office of W. S. Tufts, Withee

This building has been recently enlarged, and is now one of the largest store buildings in the county, being 70 feet in width by 100 feet in length. Mr. Tufts carries an immense stock of general merchandise. His constantly increasing trade, caused by the settling up of this locality, has compelled him from time to time to enlarge his buildings until he now has an establishment that would be a credit to a larger town than Withee, Concerning Mr. Tufts himself.
