In Celebration of 100 Years

Two ladies residing at the
Angelus Retirement Center, Lillian Meyer and Lila Hubing, recently
celebrated their 100th birthdays. Parties for family and friends
were held at the center on Lila’s Birthday, Friday, March 9th, and on
Saturday, March 10th, to celebrate Lillian’s birthday on March 12th.
Lila says her secret to longevity is, "Think positive and keep busy. Take one
day at a time." She worked at the hospital for 24 years. She is the oldest
living World War I widow in Clark County. Lillian says that her 15 years of
teaching school and going to so many dances is what has kept her young. She
said, "There were dances every day of the week - at the Silver Dome, River-side,
and lots of barn dances." Her favorites were the two-step and the waltz.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS: Monday, March 12, 2007,
marks the 100th Birthday of Lillian Meyer, and;
WHEREAS: Lillian Meyer has been a
respected Citizen of Neillsville, raising her Family, owning a business known
as SNOWBALLS’ the social gathering place for many, and continues to patronize
the City, and;
WHEREAS: Lillian Meyer and her
family of 2 Children, 5 Grandchildren, and 5 Great-Grandchildren, have had a
tremendous impact on the City of Neillsville, and;
WHEREAS: I, Diane L. Murphy, Mayor
of the City of Neillsville, do hereby proclaim Monday, March 12, 2007, as
Lillian Meyer Day in the City of Neillsville.

Special week adds to Lila Hubing’s many memories

Lila Hubing holds the framed
proclamation designating Friday, March 16th, 2007 as "Lila Hubing Day
in Neillsville." Mayor Diane Murphy issued the proclamation while retired Army
Colonel Don Harris (left) and Staff Sgt. David Barth of the Wisconsin National
Guard were there to honor Hubing as the oldest living widow of a World War I
veteran.

In her whole life, Lila Hubing has
hardly had a week quite like the last one.
Celebrating her 100th
birthday with family and friends on March 9th was certainly a special
occasion. But then, on Friday, March 16th, a proclamation setting
forth that the day was to be "Lila Hubing Day in the City of Neillsville" made
the week truly memorable.
A framed copy of the proclamation
was personally delivered to Hubing, now living at the Neillsville Retirement
Community (formerly Angelus), by Mayor Diane Murphy herself.
Retired Army Colonel Don Harris, was
there and in uniform, as was Wisconsin National Guard Staff Sgt. Dave Barth, who
recently returned from serving in the Iraq War. They saluted Hubing as the last
living widow of a World War I veteran. Her husband, Charles served as an
ambulance driver in France. He passed away in 1971.
But there were more reasons to honor
Hubing, according to the proclamation, which Murphy read aloud to a gathering
that included the retirement community’s residents and staff members.
Hubing has been a respected member
of the community, raising a family here and working at Memorial Hospital for
many years, the Mayor noted.
"This is very nice," Hubing said, as
Murphy presented her with the proclamation to the applause of those in
attendance.
