Genteman Family

To Johann and Barbara (Maier) Genteman four sons and a daughter were born.  The eldest, Heinrich (Henry) was born March 20, 1878.  He married Katharina Untershuetz who was born to Valentine and Elizabeth Untershuetz June 19, 1887.  They were married Oct. 1, 1904 in Stryj, Austria.  The couple moved to the United States, living in Chicago, Ill. Until 1920, when they moved to Levis (Clark Co., Wis.) where they went into dairying.  Henry was a policeman and Katharina owned and operated her own Dress Shop as her education was as a dressmaker.  Agriculture was a change in their mode of living.  They purchased the farm in section 14 from Thomas Kurka.  They had three daughters, Elsie, born Aug. 7, 1911, Wilhelmina, born Feb. 17, 1917, and met a tragic death at 3 years of of age when the collie dog, in playfulness pushed her into a kettle of scalding milk which had been set aside to cool.  She died of burns, April 23, 1920.  Elonora Ruth was born Sept. 22, 1922.  Henry died in 1952 and Katharina in 1980.

The family has lived in Levis all these years.  Elsie married Frank Neubecker who also owned and operated a dairy farm in Levis.  They had two daughters, Kathleen, born March 25, 1946 and Grace, born Oct. 25, 1947, and a son, Daniel, born April 6, 1950.  The Neubeckers lived on the Neubecker homestead until 1948 when they purchased the old Blum farm which was owned by Alvin Schutte and later S. Dehart and now Ronald Hainz.  Elsie sold the farm upon her husband’s death in 1954, and moved to Neillsville.

Eleanor married Herbert Schoenherr, May 18, 1941.  He owned and operated a dairy farm once occupied by Charles Lueck.  They had three sons, Herbert, born April 15, 1942, Edward, born Jan. 6, 1944, Richard born Nov. 17, 1945 and a daughter, Beverly, born April 30, 1950.  At the present, Hebert and Eleanor are still living in Levis, as are their two older sons, Herbert and Edward.

Now the second son of Johann and Barbara Genteman was named Phillip.  He was born July 16, 1883.  He married Christina Stoffel who was born in Germany in 1889.  To this union two sons, William, born Sep. 8, 1909, and Henry, born Feb. 7, 1911 and a daughter, Kathryn, born Nov. 17, 1912, made their marriage complete.  However, their happiness was married when Christina became ill with consumption, which was prevalent at that time, and she died May 8, 1917.  Phillip died Jan. 10, 1948.  Phillip’s oldest son, William, married Mary Janciga March 29, 1929.  Mary was born Dec. 6, 1911.  They had four sons.  William born Apr. 10, 1931; Edward, born Dec. 19, 1932; Robert, born May 5, 1935, and Thomas, born July 16, 1944.  William Sr. died Oct 13, 1975.  Of these children, Edward, who married Marion Adamec is still living in Levis.  They have two sons and three daughters, Gary, Duane, Sherrie, Sheila and Kaye.  Robert is living with his mother and three children, Roberta and Patrice and Peter, on the farm formerly owned by Henry Seidleman.

Phillip’s daughter, Kathryn, married Arthur Kurbyun Oct. 20, 1930.  They were parents of two daughters, Nancy, born Dec. 9, 1932 and Patricia, born Dec. 19, 1936.  They purchased the farm from her uncle Henry and set up farming.  Art built the garage and tavern on the corner of his land and did repair work on machinery and autos, besides farming.  Their daughter, Nancy, was a victim of polio.  This was in the early days when the vaccine was not yet discovered.  The mother cared for her child at home, and with much therapy her daughter became well again.  Arthur died Dec. 25, 1976.

The only daughter of Johann and Barbara Genteman stayed in Germany.  She married J. Moeck.  They were parents of Rudolph and Caroline.
