Ella D. A. (Sheldon) Cook

William E. Cook was born at Hingham, Wis., Aug. 15, 1853 to Allen and Lauretta Cook. He was married to Ella Sheldon of Dundee, Wis., Oct. 18, 1876 whose father, Isaiah, a millwright, had come to Fond du Lac from Ohio, where he had been born and reared, and where also he had married Eliza Johnston.

 

In 1878, William and Ella moved to Clark Co., on a farm just West of Loyal, Wisconsin.  They resided there for twenty-five years before moving near Oakland, Oregon, to farm.  Early in life, William was united with the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1881 he became a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church. For years he was a member of the Conference Committee and Elder in the church, with a true missionary spirit.

On Oct. 6th 1918 he with his oldest son, Walter, hitched a four horse team on the engine and cutter to move it to a neighbors, where the latter was going to fill a silo for them. They had gone only two feet when he fell from the wagon and one of the front wheels passed over his chest, killing him instantly. His sudden taking away was a shock, not only to his bereaved family, but to the community and for many miles around as he had a wide circle of friends.

He and Ella were the parents of five children, Walter and Almon Cook, Eliza Morris, Lauretta Line and Evelyn Cook.  William had a half sister, Alice Cooledge of Minneapolis, and a brother, H. B. Cook of Junction City, Oregon.

 

At the time of his death, William and Ella were members of the Presbyterian church.  William was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Oakwood, Oregon cemetery beside of his mother who was known as "Grandma Cook" when she lived in Clark County, Wisconsin.  Lauretta Cook was born in Hinesburg, Vermont, May 30, 1819. At the age of 15 she moved with her parents to Ohio. Some years later they moved to Sheboygan Co., Wis. At the age of 32 she was married to Allen Cook, who died 21 years later.
