Ernest J. Vine (1899 - 1977)

A retired town of Grant farmer and 26-year member of the Clark county fair board, Ernest J. VINE, 78, of Neillsville, died Wednesday, April 27 at the Veterans' Administration hospital in Tomah following a lingering illness. Services were held Saturday at 4 p.m. from the Neillsville United Church of Christ, and burial followed in the town of Grant cemetery. The Georgas-Gesche funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Vine, son of Fred and Nellie BENNETT Vine, was born April 25, 1899, in the town of Grant and was educated at the Kurth school. He entered military service with Company A of the 128th Infantry in April of 1916 and served his country until January 28, 1919. He saw duty on the Mexican border and later was sent to France where he was wounded at Chateau Thierry on August 1, 1918. He spent four months in a hospital in France.

His marriage to the former Margaret Roder took place June 30, 1920, in the town of Pine Valley. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in the town of Grant for 42 years.

Mr. Vine served as treasurer for 18 of the 26 years he spent on the county fair board. He also managed the Neillsville Shipping Association for 16 years and served on the Milk Pool board for 12 years, and on the Farmer's Union board for one term. Additionally, Mr. Vine held township and school board offices in the town of Grant. He was a member of the United Church of Christ and of Haugen-Richmond American Legion Post No. 73.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Gordon Vine of Neillsville one sister, Mrs. Roy (Lettie) Suckow of Neillsville one brother, William Vine of Granton and five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The Rev. Paul Schippel officiated at the Saturday services. Pallbearers were Fred Vine, Roger Vine, Roger Grottke, Glen Suckow, Walter Roder and Wendell Roder. Graveside military rites were by Haugen-Richmond American Legion Post no. 73.
