Mravik, Albert S. (October 27, 1918 - September 28, 2008)

 

Albert S. Mravik, age 89, of Gilman, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls.

 

He was born on October 27, 1918 in Lublin, the son of the late John and Louise (Cervenansky) Mravik.

 

He attended area schools and graduated from Medford High School and Taylor County Normal School. Al taught at Roosevelt School for one year before he joined the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. He served during World War II in North Africa and Italy. He also served in the National Guard for over 20 years. After his discharge, he taught one year in Perkinstown.

 

On May 30, 1946 he was united in marriage to Wilma Jaeger at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lublin. Since their marriage they have resided in the Gilman area. Al worked for the Gilman Post Office and served as postmaster until his retirement in 1974. Besides his love for his family, he enjoyed hunting, bowling, going to auctions, antiques and collecting rocks. Al was a member of the Gilman American Legion Post No. 359, the Sheldon VFW, the Lions Club, a former member of the Gilman Community Betterment Association, and the Gilman Fire Department, serving as assistant chief until retiring.

 

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma of Gilman; their children, Rodger (Mulu) Mravik of Gilman, Linda (Michael) Herrick and Gregory Mravik, both of Siren, and Susan Mravik of Ada, Okla.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Valentine (Rosella) Mravik of South Milwaukee and Emil (Dawn) Mravik of Portage. He is preceded in death by his parents; and sisters and brothers, John and Margaret in infancy, William, Louise, Edward, Frances, Amelia, Julia, Steven and Michael.

 

A Christian Burial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Gilman, with Father John Long officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday one hour prior at the Gilman Funeral Home.
