Bruegl, Vernon Herbert (May 3, 1920 - August 23, 2009)  

 

Vernon "Murph" Herbert Bruegl, 89, Rib Lake, died Sunday, Aug. 23 at Golden LivingCenter in Rib Lake.  

 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Aug. 27 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake, with Father Otto Bucher officiating. 

 

Interment with full military honors presented by the Lehman-Clendenning American Legion Post and the Premeau-Schauss VFW Post was at Lakeview Cemetery in Rib Lake.  

 

Pallbearers were Paul Yanko, Jeff Yanko, Brian Denzine, Cole Denzine, Jamie Malson and Joe Kathrein. 

 

Vernon Bruegl was born May 3, 1920 in Medford to the late Louis and Alice (Cullen) Bruegl.  

 

He attended Medford area schools and was a 1940 graduate of Medford High School. He worked for the Oconomowoc Canning Company, then served during World War II in the United States Army Air Force from March 3, 1942 to July 2, 1945, serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. He also served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. 

 

On April 24, 1948 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Rib Lake, he married Kathryn Louise Daus, who preceded him in death in 2003. He was employed for 36 years as a lineman with Northern States Power Co. in Rib Lake and Phillips. 

 

He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Lehman-Clendennig American Legion Post No. 274 where he had been past commander and a member of the firing squad, Premeau-Schauss VFW Post No. 7817 of Westboro, Lakeview Cemetery Board, charter member of Rib Lake Lions, and past member of Phillips and Rib Lake Fire Departments, Knights of Columbus in Phillips and past village trustee for Rib Lake. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, spending time with his family, watching baseball on TV and watching the Interwald Woodticks baseball team as well as the Rib Lake High School and Dairyland baseball teams. 

 

Survivors include one daughter, Luanne (Frank "Joe") Yanko of Rib Lake; one brother, Gordon of Anderson, S.C.; one sister, Florence Layton of West Lafayette, Ind.; two sisters-in-law, Beverly Bruegl of Prescott and Alice Mueller of Rhinelander; three grandchildren, Paul (Karen) Yanko of Elkhorn, Jeff (Sandi) Yanko of Rib Lake and Kristin (Brian) Denzine of Medford; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. 

 

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Beth Bruegl in 1974; six sisters, Dolores (Walter) Kuenne, Evalyn (Orval) Powell, Norma (Leroy) Lorbeski, Doris (Chuck) Papes, Mary Bruegl in infancy, Joyce (Patrick) Bradley and Dort Layton; two brothers, Lawrence (Kaye) and Bob; and two sisters-in-law, Jean Bruegl and Olga Bruegl.  

 

Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
