Schumacher, Anna "Ann" E. (Zirngibl) (March 15, 1923 - August 7, 2011)

Anna "Ann" E. Schumacher, 88, Medford, died on Sunday, Aug. 7 at Deerview Meadows, where she had resided the past three years, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hope Hospice.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger officiating. Pallbearers are Bill Zirngibl, Dan Weber, Ken Hinke, and Ned, Neil, Ryan and Tony Schumacher.

Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Cremainal inurnment will take place on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford.

Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.

The former Anna Zirngibl was born on March 15, 1923 in the Town of Little Black to the late Michael and Mary F. (Koestner) Zirngibl.

She attended Little White School and Medford High School. Anna graduated as valedictorian of her high school class, and trained as an elementary school teacher at Taylor County Normal School. When teacher licensing changed, she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1959 from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Later she received her Pre-k-12 grade cognitive disability certification from UW-Eau Claire, and held a life license in this area for the remainder of her career.

On July 24, 1951 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, she married Melvin N. Schumacher, who preceded her in death. She was an elementary school teacher at Lublin, Marshfield, Abbotsford and Medford area schools for 47 years. She was twice recognized for her work as a retired teacher in the Stetsonville Title I reading program as Medford Area Schools Volunteer of the Year.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and WEAC, and past member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Dorchester. She was very active and involved in her churches, holding many leadership positions, and was influential in organizing the St. Louis School in Dorchester. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, traveling, cooking, reading and going to dances.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary (William) Wacek of Westboro; a grandson, Mark (Beth) Wacek of Menomonie; a great-grandson, Zachary Wacek of Menomonie; three sisters, Evelyn Kapfhamer of Medford, Rita (Bill) Kuchenbecker of Neillsville and Marilyn (Ernie) Haug of Brookfield; four sisters-in-law, Carol Zirngibl of Milwaukee, Agnes Zirngibl of Medford, Rosaclara Gable of Gainesville, Ga., and Marlene (Bryce) Hinke of Stetsonville; a brother-in-law, Robert (Dorothy) Schumacher of Dorchester; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Elmer, Ray, Leo, Henry and Don, and a sister, Irene Metz.
