DeVries, Levern Julius (17 July 1939 – 3 October 2008)

Levern J. DeVries, 69, of Plainview, MN, died Friday afternoon, Oct. 3, 2008, at the Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN of Cancer.

Levern Julius DeVries was born July 17, 1939, in Stewartville, MN, to Andrew and Isabell (Buche) DeVries. He moved to Plainview, MN, with his family at the age of three. He attended Plainview Schools and graduated from Plainview High School in 1957. He then attended Winona State University in Winona, MN, and received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Education. He taught grades 7-12, mainly middle school in Milwaukee for one year, at Mountain Lake, MN, for two years, one year at Alexandria, MN, and then 29 years at Black River Falls, retiring in 1997. After retiring, Levern moved to Plainview, MN.

He was a member of MEA; WEA and NEA; was active in Boy Scouts for 20 years, serving as a Scout leader and camp staff. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, especially enjoying fly fishing, he also enjoyed archaeology, digging for artifacts through the University of La Crosse Archaeology Program and was a member of the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center; he also enjoyed spending time traveling.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Arlene DeVries of Plainview, MN; nieces, Carla (Shane) Moore of Rochester, MN, and Brenda (Tim) Stelow of Plainview, MN; grand nieces and nephews, Jared (Becca) Sell of Rochester, MN, Ashley Sell of Owatonna, MN, and Cole and Claire Stelow of Plainview, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Marty DeVries, in 2008.

Private burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery (MN).

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel, in Plainview, MN.
