Lasher, John H. (18 AUG 1889 - 3 MAY 1964)

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. George Warren of the Methodist Church at the Jones Funeral Home in Waterloo, Wis., on Wednesday, May 6th for John Howard Lasher, 74, a former Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) resident, who died in Florida Sunday, May 3, 1964 following a long illness. He had made his home recently in Chicago and spent the winters in Florida. Masonic services were held on Tuesday night at 8:00 o'clock and interment was at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Waterloo.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Lenore Towne of Watertown and Mrs. Harold Detloff of Edgerton, Wis.

Mr. Lasher was born in Waterloo on Aug. 18, 1889 and attended the Waterloo High School. He was a teacher and principal at school in Rome and Footville, Wis., before coming to Thorp to serve as principal in 1914. He remained here until 1917, when he received a commission as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, but returned to Thorp in 1918. In 1921 he went to Antigo where he became principal of the Langlade County Teachers College.

Mr. Lasher was the first paid Wisconsin 4-H agent. He served as state director of the National youth Administration (NYA) with headquarters in Milwaukee, for several years, and was instrumental in the establishment of Camp Wawbeck rehabilitation settlement (for crippled children) near Wis. Dells in 1938.

He served as deputy national director of the NYA in Washington, D.C. and was regional director of the Midwest States' Rehabilitation Service. He organized a youth program in Korea for the State Department in 1948.

Mr. Lasher was a charter member of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118 of the American Legion of Thorp, and was the first adjutant. He also was a fifty year old member of the Waterloo Masonic Lodge, a member of the Elks Lodge and Kiwanis Club, and belonged to the American Legion Post in Milwaukee at the time of his death
