Henry W. Malchow (18 Sep 1854 - 9 Oct 1933)

Veteran Farmer is Third of Village Pioneers to Die Within Ten Days

Dorchester, Oct 11 (1933)--Funeral rites will be conducted at the William Malchow home here at 2 pm. Thursday for Henry W. Malchow, Sr. who died there at 9:30 am on Monday, at the age of 79. He had been seriously ill for six weeks with cancer of the stomach.

The services will be conducted by the Rev. J.R. Kalwitz, of Medford and there will be no church service. It was Mr. Malchow’s wish that funeral services be held at the home and that those attending the funeral walk to the place of burial, Peace Church cemetery, which is only a few rods from the house.

Mr. Malchow was born at Port Washington on Sept. 18, 1854, and continued to live there until he grew to manhood, later living at Milwaukee for a brief period before coming to Dorchester in 1880 and settling on a farm a half-mile north of the village. In 1881 he married Amelia Wilke in Milwaukee. The greater part of Clark county was at that time in forest.

Mr. Malchow was a charter member of the Evangelical Church of Peace, and assisted in its construction. He is the third of Dorchester’s earliest settlers to pass away within ten days, the others being William Beisner, who died on Sept. 30, and G.P. Schmidt, who died on Oct.3.

Mrs. Malchow died in 1923. Surviving relatives include six daughters, Mrs. A.J. Sprague (Anna), Stevens Point; Mrs. Seth Barker (Lizzie), Abbotsford; Mrs. Fred Werner (Emma), Dorchester; Mrs. Henry Rau (Mary) Dorchester; Mrs. Hugo Zenker (Bertha), Park Falls; Mrs. Louis Marlow (Alvina), Gratiot; four sons, Henry Jr., Medford; Walter, Stevens Point; Fred, Park Falls; and William, Dorchester;
