REPUBLICAN COUNTY CONVENTION

The delegate convention of the republicans of Eau Claire county to select delegates to the state and district conventions and to nominate a member of assembly and county officers was called to order at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the court house, by A. M. Gibbons, chairman of the county committee.

On motion of M. Griffin, George B. Shaw was chosen temporary chairman. Mr. Shaw briefly thanked the convention and read the call. On motion of J. M. Brackett, A. E. Blake was chosen temporary secretary.

On motion, the chair appointed a committee of three on credentials— H. M. Stocking, Patrick Cuddy, N. C. Foster. On motion, the chair appointed a committee of three on permanent organization—J. H. Waggoner, M. Griffin, Ira B. Bradford.

A short recess was taken, on motion, at the close of which the committee on credentials reported the list of delegates present and entitled to seats.

THE CONVENTION.

Following is the list of delegates as reported by the committee:

Eau Claire City—First ward—Patrick Cuddy, (2 votes) Ira Schumaker, C. C. Sogge.

Second—M. Griffin, Oluf Sherman, Peter Bolin, J. H. Young, Stanley Andrews.

Third ward—H. C. Howland, C. H. Henry, J. M. Brackett, H. M. Stocking, W. P, Bartlett, John McDonough.

Union—J. A. Southmayd (2 votes)

Washington—A. E. Blake, George Larkin, H. P. Robins, J. J. Kelly.

The committee's report was adopted. In the matter of the contesting delegations from the Seventh and Eighth wards, the delegates elected at the first caucus held were admitted in each case.

The committee on permanent organization reported in favor of preserving the temporary organization. Adopted.

DELEGATES SELECTED.

G. 0. Jones moved that a committee of three be appointed to report to the convention names of persons for delegates to the state convention.

J. H. Waggoner asked Mr. Jones to increase the committee to five and include in its duties selection of delegates to the congressional district convention. The suggestion was adopted, and the motion prevailed. G. O. Jones, C. H. Henry, J. F. Moore, J. H. Waggoner and G. S. Graves were appointed as such committee and after consultation made the following report, which was adopted:

Delegates to state convention—N. C. Foster, Ira B. Bradford, H. M. Stocking, J. M. Brackett, Sever E. Brimi.

Delegates to congressional convention—G. F. Hamilton, Robert McLaren, W. W. Downs, John Young, Rev. Wm. Haw, Pat Cuddy, Frank Larson, George B. Shaw.

During the conference of this committee, which continued for some time, the convention took up the nomination of candidates in the order observed in the call.

FOR ASSEMBLYMAN.

The name of T. E. Williams was presented by Ira B. Bradford, and the nomination seconded by J. F. Moore. On motion, the nomination of Mr. Williams was made unanimous.

FOR SHERIFF.

W. F. Bartlett presented the name of P. J. Cosgrove, which was seconded by Michael Griffin, and Mr. Cosgrove was nominated by acclamation.

FOR DISTRICT ATTORNEY.

M. Griffin nominated Henry Cousins and moved that he be nominated by, acclamation. N. C. Foster presented the name of S. W. McCaslin, which was afterwards withdrawn, and Mr. Cousins was unanimously nominated.

FOR CLERK OF THE COURT.

J. H. Waggoner, by request of W. W. Downs, who had many supporters for this office, but conceded the superior claim of the town of Bridge Creek and the eastern part of the county to a prominent place on the ticket—not yet awarded it—withdrew the name of Mr. Downs as a, candidate for clerk of the circuit court and moved that, if no other candidates were named, Henry McBain, of Augusta, be declared the nominee by acclamation. The motion prevailed.

FOR REGISTER OF DEEDS.

Ole Hanson presented the name of L. E. Strum. Ole Arnstad presented the name of Jacob Thompson. A ballot was ordered with the result of 60 for Strum, 9 for Thompson and 8 for A. W. Munger. Mr. Strum was made the unanimous nominee.

FOR TREASURER.

The name of James A. Hume was presented. There were no other nominations, and Mr. Hume was nominated by acclamation.

FOR COUNTY CLERK.

W. P. Bartlett presented the name of W. Chapman and moved that he be made the nominee by acclamation. J. H. Waggoner, by request of delegates supporting G. O. Stiles, presented the name of that gentleman. J. C. Hackett moved that a formal ballot for county clerk be taken. Carried. Mr. Chapman received 43 votes, Mr. Stiles 34, and Mr. Chapman was declared the nominee.

FOB SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS.

The name of Mrs. Elizabeth Sherwin was presented by G. S. Graves. H. C. Howland and J. F. Moore supported the nomination, and Mrs. Sherwin was made the nominee by acclamation.

FOR CORONER.

W. H. Willard was nominated for coroner by acclamation,

FOR SURVEYOR.

The names of Howell Drake, of Washington, and W. H. Lett, of Fairchild, were presented. Mr. Lett was nominated after informal and formal ballots, the vote upon the informal ballot being 39 for Lett, 37 for Drake, and on the formal, 41 for Lett and 37 for Drake.

COUNTY COMMITTEE.

A county committee was appointed consisting of H. M. Stocking, J. C. Hackett, Ole Arnstad, C. H. Henry and John McDonough.

Just before adjournment the following

RESOLUTION,

offered by Michael Griffin, was unanimously adopted:

Resolved, That the republicans of Eau Claire county, In convention assembled, recognizing the eminent service rendered by our present member of congress Hon. W. T. Price, in behalf of the highest and best interests of the people of this district; and the untiring energy. and patriotic zeal displayed by him in his efforts to pro mote their welfare, hereby renew their pledges of continued confidence in his ability and integrity and endorse him as the first choice of the republican party of Eau Claire county for re-nomination to the exalted position which he has in the past acceptably filled.
