Phillips, Charlotte Amelia (7 NOV 1870 - 14 MAY 1949)

Mrs. A. Phillips Passes Away

After a lingering illness Mrs. Alfred Phillips, 78, passed away at 4:20 p.m. Saturday, May 14th at the home of her son, Gordon, 309 N. Vine St. Marshfield where she had been removed from the hospital. She had undergone an emergency operation at the hospital Friday, April 15, and due to the fact that she had suffered diabetes for the past 13 years, all medical care and the loving care of her family could do, was not enough. God took her home with him to a well earned rest.

Charlotte Amelia Brett, daughter of George and Amelia Brett was born in Manawa, Waupaca County, Nov. 7, 1870.

She was married to Alfred Bradford Phillips at New London Nov. 7, 1899 going to Manawa to live. They came to Spencer with their two sons Arthur and Gordon in 1908 and purchased the Holmes farm in the Town of Spencer later buying the site and building the house where Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hayward now live.

In 1924 they moved to Spencer buying their present home.

Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Methodist church and belonged to the W. S. C. S. of that church. She was active in church work up to the time of failing health.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Arthur of Spencer; and Gordon of Marshfield, Two granddaughters, Mrs. Frank (Katharynn) Goeltz, Colby and Valere Spencer; one great grandchild of Colby; one brother Wesley, Marshfield; and a sister, Mrs. Elsie Helms, Royalton. Four brothers and two sisters are dead.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist Church, the Rev. R. J. Fleming officiating. Burial was made in the West Spencer cemetery. The body was taken to the Swarthout Funeral Home where it remained until 11 a. m. Tuesday when it was taken to the church to lie in state until the time of services.

Mrs. Russell Andrews and Mrs. A. J. McIlhattan sang two duets “In the Sweet Bye and Bye” and “Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us.”

Pallbearers were Messers J. L. Driscoll, Geo. Hayward, Al Martin, Frank Seefeldt, Eugene Cross and Charles Griepentrog. Those carrying flowers were Mr. H. Prehn, Mrs. Geo. Hayward, Mrs. J. L. Driscoll, Mrs. Frank Goeltz, Sr., Mrs. F. C. Corbett and Mrs. Milton Bombard.

A loving wife, mother, neighbor and friend has left our midst and although all will miss her, they would not wish her back to undergo the pain and suffering through which she has passed.

Spencer and community express their deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Out-of-town relatives here for the funeral were Mr. Otto Fiker, Bruce, Wis.; Mrs. Elsie Humes, and Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln Ritchie, Royalton; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bartlett and daughters Ruth and Ellen, New London; Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Corbett, Bancroft; Mr. and Mrs. Harlow Humes and Mr. and Mrs. Verle Cordiere, Madison.
