Potter, Harold G. (? - 2 December 1969)

The body of Harold Potter, 46, Neillsville supper club operator, was found about 8 p.m. Tuesday in his room in the Merchants Hotel. Authorities said he had taken his own life, using a rope.

Potter who had operated the Sportsman’s Barb and Café in Neillsville having sold it to Harland and Elsie Lastofka before assuming the proprietorship of the Moonlite Tavern on the north edge of the city a year ago, had been making his home at the hotel for but a short time.

He had received his education in Clark County schools and married the former Doris Ott in Dubuque, Ia., November 12, 1950. He drove a milk truck for several years, and later operated the pool hall in Neillsville. The family lived in Milwaukee and Gary, Ind., for a number of years and returned to Neillsville in 1966.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; four sons, David Joseph, Daniel Albert, Thomas Harland and Timothy Roy, and a daughter, Lisa Marie, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Vern Davis of Williams Bay; two sisters, Mrs. Jerry (Irene) Pluster of Milwaukee and Mrs. Tom (Mary) Anderson of Genoa City; and a brother, Roy, of Lake Geneva.

He was a veteran of World War II.

Funeral services for Harold G. Potter, 46, of Neillsville, who died December 2 were held Friday at 1:30 p.m. from the Georgas Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Dushek of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Robert E. Murphy, O. W. Gluck, Gerald Dankemyer, Robert Horswill, Bernard Dais and Gene Gault. “Abide with me” was sung by Fred Murphy, accompanied by Mrs. Jess W. Scott.

People from out of town attending included: Mr. and Mrs. Vern Davis of Williams Bay; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Pluster, Mr. and Mrs. F. Kipp, Mr. and Mrs. Manfred Benduhn and Henry Ott of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Anderson of Genoa City; Edgar Ott of Ripon; Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Davis and Robert Horswill of Black River Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Francis Michels of Alma Center; Mr and Mrs. Alvin Kippenhan of Greenwood; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Murphy of Granton; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Krejci of La Crosse Mr. and Mrs. Gene Gault of Gary, Ind., and Mrs. Harry Pankau of Oshkosh.
