Gerhardt, William (17 FEB 1854 – 10 Jan 1916)

William Gerhardt died on Monday at his home on Division Street. He was born at Farmington, Washington County, Wisconsin, on Feb. 17, 1854. He grew to young manhood there and at the age of 19 started out to make his way in life. He worked for a time in Winnebago County near Randolph and came to Clark County in 1878. He worked on different farms and in the lumber camps for a time and accumulated enough to start a home of his own. He was united in marriage to Christine Dettman in Washington County on Jan. 1, 1883. They moved onto his land in the town of Grant and cleared up a fine farm. To this union the following sons were born: Willard, Walter and Oscar, and their mother died on Oct. 7, 1901. On May 16, 1905 Mr. Gerhardt was again married, taking for his wife Mrs. Rose Gerhardt at Chicago. Five years ago they moved to their home on Division Street. One daughter, Ella, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gerhardt and he survived by the following relatives in addition to his wife and three sons and daughter: two step-sons, Otto and Harold, four brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Gerhardt was a devout Christian man having been a life-long member of the Methodist Church. He lived a clean and honorable life, one which won the respect of all who knew him. He was a man of high ideals and exceptional moral character and his integrity was known by all. He was a man who added to the social, moral and financial life of any community and his death is to be deeply regretted by all. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 1 o’clock at the house and 1:30 at the Methodist Church.
