Malstrom, Bernice A. (Szydlowski) (21 JUL 1919 - 14 SEP 2014)

Bernice A. Malstrom, 95, Medford, died on Sunday, Sept. 14 at Aspirus Care and Rehab in Medford, where she had resided the past five years.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger officiating. Interment will be at Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens in New Port Richey, Fla. Her granddaughters will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Hemer Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.

The former Bernice Szydlowski was born on July 21, 1919 in Chicago, Ill., to the late Walter and Jennie (Gorczewski) Szydlowski. She attended St. Hyacinth Elementary School and was a graduate of Lucy Flower High School, both in Chicago, and Chicago School of Cosmetology.

On January 1, 1938 in Chicago, she married Richard Malstrom, who preceded her in death in May 2001. She worked as a beautician in the Chicago area until retirement. During retirement she resided in Mesa, Ariz., and Holiday, Fla. She moved to Medford in December 2001 and resided at Country Gardens and Our House Assisted Living for periods of time.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. She enjoyed silversmithing, lapidary, macramé, stained glass work, and dancing waltzes and polkas with her husband.

Survivors include a son, Richard "Dick" T. (Lynn) Malstrom of Medford; a sister, Helen (Frank) Mindak of Oak Park, Ill.; six grandchildren, Jenn (Gerald) Knippel, Leza (Kevin) Wells, Cary Natoli, Juli (Darryl) Volk, Kristi (John) Murphy and Brittany Ritzmann; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Madelynn Ritzmann in 1995, and a sister, Irene Treve.
