Vlcek, Laddie (15 MAY 1928 - 18 OCT 2014)

Former Westboro and Ogema area resident Laddie J. Vlcek, 86, Medford, died on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where he had been a patient the past 3-1/2 weeks.

A memorial service, with Rev. Don Rhody officiating, and interment of his cremated remains at Hillside Cemetery in Ogema, will take place in spring 2015.

Laddie Vlcek was born on May 15, 1928 in Westboro to the late Frank and Frances (Simek) Vlcek.

He attended Westboro Elementary School and was a 1946 graduate of Westboro High School. He served in the United States Army from May 1946 to November 1947, achieving the rank of sergeant. After the service he resided in Phillips and worked at Flambeau Milling.

On June 12, 1950 in Milwaukee, he married Ida Mae Soderstrom, who preceded him in death on March 17, 2011. In 1958 they moved to Ogema where he began his career with the United States Postal Service, working 30 years, first as a clerk then as postmaster, until retirement in 1987.

He was a member of Ogema Baptist Church where he served on various groups, including deacon and financial secretary, and past member of Ogema Lions Club and Ogema Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include two sons, Brien (Kate Carollo) Vlcek of Seattle, Wash., and Bruce Vlcek of New Bedford, Mass.; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Dan) Duryea, Laura (Courtney) Taylor, Allison Vlcek and Kevin Vlcek; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Rudy and Frank Vlcek, and two sisters, Martha Look and Helen Axlerod.
