Gerber, Harland George (22 June 1927 - 28 April 2015) With Flag

Harland G. Gerber, 87, died Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at his home in Neillsville.

Harland George Gerber was born June 22, 1927, in Granton, the son of Alfred and Aurelia (Elmhorst) Gerber. He graduated from Granton high School as valedictorian of his class, and upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany. After an honorable discharge, he went to work at the Marshfield radio station. He worked at Massey Ferguson for 12 years. His last employer was the United States Postal Service, Neillsville.

Harland was a quiet gentleman of strong spiritual faith, a man of great character, fair, honest and humble. Most of all, Harland was a compassionate son, as he lovingly cared for his mother for 20-plus years. Harland enjoyed watching baseball and was an avid reader, always learning. Harland was especially blessed with the ability to express eloquently in writing to family how grateful he was for having them in his life. He wrote and authored a book, ’Give it Back to the Indians.’ Harland was a member and volunteer of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville.

He is survived by brothers: Merlin (LaVonne) Gerber of Madison, and Lowell (Arcy) Gerber of Navarre, FL; a sister-in-law, Patricia Gerber of Humbird; and many nieces and nephews.

Harland was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Alfred and Walter.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 8, 2015, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville. Pastor Timothy Biebert will officiate. Providing music will be Sharon Nemitz. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday morning at the church. Interment will be in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 711 W. 5th St. Neillsville, WI 54456

Online condolences may be made at www.geschefh.com.  The Gesche Funeral Home is assisting Harland’s family with funeral arrangements.
