Schroeder, Carl John (Arrested with Confidential Military Material – 9 Sep 1918)
Private Carl John Schroeder, a self-confessed pro-German of Greenwood, Wis., was
the man arrested at Camp Grant with confidential maps and papers relating to
military matters last Monday as he was about to take a train from Camp Grant to
Chicago, it was learned here.
Schroeder is regarded by military authorities as a dangerous man and had been
under surveillance for many weeks, ever since he told officers of Company M,
34th Infantry that he sided with the Kaiser in the war and would under no
circumstances go to Europe to fight.
The data found on Schroeder as he was about to take the train is said to be of a
nature that it would make it most valuable to the German government, could it
once by gotten to the intelligence department of the German army. – Rockford
