The establishment of two memorials for former Thorp High School athletes who have died while in the service of their country was announced last Tuesday night at the annual athletic banquet honoring the school’s athletes.

Principal Floyd Hanley announced that a Freedom Shrine will be place in the lobby of the school in honor of Ron Sandel, a 1964 graduate who was killed in Vietnam.

In the shrine will be place such things as the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, Monroe Doctrine, the Gettysburg Address, the German and Japanese surrenders in the First and Second World Wars, the United Nations Charters and many other historical documents.

Bandor, perhaps the greatest athlete in Thorp history, was killed just a few days ago in a jeep accident at Ft. Sill, Okla. Contributions are still being made to a memorial in his name, but the nature of the memorial has not bee determine.

Resumes of the past season were made by all coaches, who also introduced the lettermen on each squad and talked of prospects for the 1968-69 school year.

Guest speaker at the banquet, sponsored by Anderson’s Dept. Store, I.G.A. Store, Larson’s Feed, and Bishop’s Thor Gas, was Gene Calhoun, Madison, a Big Ten football and basketball official, who refereed the 1968 Rose Bowl game between Indiana and Southern California.

Calhoun, a Madison attorney who has handled the legal aspects involved in the signing of some 57 athletes, mostly from Wisconsin, by professional teams, regaled his listeners with stories about them and his officiating experiences. Amon the athletes he represented were Rick Reichardt, the recipient of the largest bonus in baseball history, Harvey Kuehn, Jim O’Toole, Pat Richter and Ron Vanderkelen.

Calhoun advised the athletes in the audience to take their work seriously, because the problems confronting them in athletics, more so than in any other endeavor, conform to the ones they will face later in life.
