Destroys Mile Away Tavern (27 Mar 1976)

The Thorp Fire Department was called to a fire at Mile Away Tavern about 2:45
A.M. on Saturday, March 27, 1876.
The building was destroyed. Only a cooler and furnace room are left standing.
The fire is believed to have started in the northwest corner of the building.
The cause of the blaze is unknown and investigation continues.
High winds hampered firefighting efforts and caused concern about a farm house
across the road, but no injuries were reported.

Librarians Hold Service Workshop (25 Mar 1976)

Thorp hosted the Wisconsin Valley Library Service Workshop on services to the
handicapped on Thursday, March 25, 1976. Mary Leon Miller of the Milwaukee
Public Library spoke on the use of talking books an cassettes for the blind and
physically handicapped. The meeting from 9:30 to 3:30 was held at the Morgan
Plaza Meeting Room.
Fort librarians attended, some being from Tri-Valley, which includes Stanley and
the area west. Wisconsin Valley includes Thorp and the area east of Thorp.
Thirty two libraries were represented, with some father libraries being
Ladysmith, Rice Lake, River Falls, Wisconsin Rapids, Rib Lake and Antigo. They
were impressed with the facilities Thorp has for senior citizens. Josephine
Kozenka opened her apartment for a tour.

The Thorp Fire Department got to try out its new fire truck under actual
firefighting conditions on Sunday,
April 4, 1976.
The firemen were called to a fire at the dwelling occupied by Jack Hickman,
located six miles south and one and a half miles east of Thorp in the Town of
Reseburg, about 8 p.m. Sunday.
The building was gutted. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under
investigation. The firemen were at the scene until about 10 p.m., and according
to Fire Chief Gene Zoromski, the fire truck operated well.

Campbell, Anson J. (30 May 1892 – 24 Mar 1976)
Anson J. Campbell, McAllen, Texas, formerly of Marshfield, died Saturday morning
at McAllen General Hospital in McAllen. He would have been 84 on May 30, 1976.
He was admitted to the hospital March 24 with a broken hip suffered in a fall in
his home, and died of complications after surgery.
Rites were held at 4 p.m. Monday, April 5, 1976 at the Episcopal Church, with
interment also taking place in McAllen.
Mr. Campbell was born May 30, 1892 in Thorp, Wisconsin, was was married
September 1, 1914.
Surviving are his wife, three daughters and a son.
Mr. Campbell was engaged in the lumber business in Marshfield under the name of
Booth-Campbell Lumber Company until 1929, when he moved his family to McAllen
and purchased a citrus ranch.
There are 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

On Friday, April 2, 1976, the Thorp Fire Department was called to a fire at the
Theodore Suda farm in the Town of Reseburg, six miles east and four and a half
miles south of Thorp, about 7 a.m.
A motor on a hay conveyor was on fire. Farm hands extinguished the fire by the
time the fire department arrived. Damage was reportedly minimal.

daughter, Charlene M., to Patrick J. Bushek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence
Bushek, La Crosse.
Miss Sandel is a graduate from District I Technical Institute and is now a
secretary at Career Development Center, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Her fiancé served
4 ½ years in the Marine Corp, and then attended UW-Eau Claire. He is now a
Realtor for Gerrard Realty Corporation, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
An October 2, 1976 wedding is being planned.
