Avry Wuethrich, daughter of Trevor and Tonia Wuethrich of Greenwood, was presented the Good Citizen Award from the Eau Claire chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) at a ceremony April 1.

This award is given to a high school senior who excels academically, participates in extracurricular activities and is active in the community.

Wuethrich was most proud of being the president of the student council, Family Careers and Community Leaders of America and Spanish Club, was vice president of her class and the National Honor Society, serving as captain of the girls’ volleyball and basketball teams, and being an active member of FFA.

In addition, Wuethrich was named valedictorian of her graduating class with a cumulative 4.0 grade-point average, has received all-conference awards for both volleyball and basketball and volunteers regularly for the community.

Wuethrich plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison and major in economics.

Approximately two dozen high schools in the Chippewa Valley and beyond participate in the program and select a student to represent their schools. All the students are “topnotch,” and DAR members are proud to recognize these exceptional students.

The DAR, founded in 1890, is a volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to “keeping America strong by promoting patriotism, preserving U.S. history and supporting education programs.” Current DAR members fund local scholarships, pioneer historic restorations and lead volunteer projects in their communities.

Fundraiser Helps Military Personnel Visit Family (2024)

Jodi Sampson holds her son, Benjamin Gibboney’s scrapbook. Sampson started a fundraiser called “Send a Soldier Home: One Painting at a Time.”

June Thompson/Clark County Press

“Send a Soldier Home: One Painting at a Time” is a fundraiser started by Jodi Sampson and her family to help finance newly stationed soldiers’ first-time visit home to their families.

This fundraiser began in 2016 but was suspended in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Sampson is planning this fundraiser again as an annual event.

She first started “Send a Soldier Home” when her son, Benjamin Gibboney, enlisted in the Army. The fundraiser helped to bring Gibboney home for his first visit. After Sampson’s son was stationed in Alaska, he was able to come home to Wisconsin and visit family.

“[The soldiers] make very little money when they start in the military,” said Sampson. “They don’t get much notice for leave, so that’s why their airline tickets are so much.”

Sampson’s family members have served in the military.

“My father was in the Air Force and my brother was in the Army,” Sampson said. “My son, Benjamin, said he wanted to be just like my brother, Dennis, a career soldier.”

Benjamin Gibboney prepared for his military career before graduating from high school. He attended training in Wausau. At 17 years old, he enlisted and went to basic training at Fort Benning, GA.

“My husband, Greg, and I went to Benjamin’s graduation along with his father, Steven Gibboney and his wife, Darcie,” said Sampson.

Benjamin Gibboney is currently stationed Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, AK. He is a Staff Sergeant and serves in the infantry.

“I don’t think people realize what military people give up,” said Sampson.

To bring Benjamin Gibboney home the first time, Sampson knew crafters who suggested having a “paint party” to raise funds to pay for airline tickets. They made enough money to send their son and his friend home.

“The ‘Send a Soldier Home: One Painting at a Time’ is painting an American flag wood barn quilt,” said Sampson. “I’d love to raise $3000.”

Sampson hopes this amount would send four military people home. “They just need to be from Wisconsin, and it has to be their first trip home. We always sent someone home who’s from Wisconsin—any branch of the military. It’s a great way for people to give back to someone local.” said Jodi Sampson.

“Send a Soldier Home: One Painting at a Time” fundraiser has sent five service members home.

“The parent or soldier will purchase the tickets. When they tell us what the amount is, we give them a check for the amount,” said Sampson. “It’s a first come, first serve basis. We’ll put names on a list.”

The “Send a Soldier Home: One Painting at a Time” fundraiser will be held Friday, April 19 at the American Legion Post 73 during the Friday fish fry. The Paint Party starts at 7 p.m.

Legion Auxiliary Post 320 Helps Feed My People (2024)

The Feed My People Food Bank arrived in Humbird to disperse food to people, March 26.

By June Thompson

Inflation has affected food prices so much that feeding a family cost much more. And it can be a struggle to pay the higher prices.

Yet, there is a solution: Feed My People Food Bank in Eau Claire. Feed My People comes twice a month to Humbird, giving food to individuals and families.

Jan Elfering, president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 320 in the Humbird area (Humbird, Fairchild, Merrillan and Alma Center) has been actively involved in volunteering for the Feed My People Food Bank.

“The ladies auxiliary co-sponsors Feed My People. We’re in our third year,” Elfering said. “We give $100 a month to Feed My People. The funds come from auxiliary fundraisers and donations.

“People are appreciative that we are there helping them. The number of families are increasing. We’ve only had to cancel three times in three years [due to weather].”

Elfering encourages people to help for a few hours twice a month or whenever they can.

“Volunteers can just show up,” Elfering said. “The truck comes at 12:25 p.m. Show up and we’ll put you to work. We’re done by 1:30 pm.”

Another auxiliary member, Cheryl Kath, has also been involved with volunteering with Feed My People Food Bank since its inception.

“I knew they were doing this in Fairchild,” Kath said.

Kath and other auxiliary members contacted Feed My People Food Bank in Eau Claire to get a food delivery started in Humbird. All the food is donated.

“For Feed My People to deliver to Humbird, there had to be at least 30 families receiving food,” Kath said.

That number was surpassed from the start.

“The truck brings food for 175 families now,” said Kath. “People are allowed to pick up for more than one family. People look forward to it.”

Kath is one of many volunteers who helps organize and bag the food items.

“We get monetary donations from businesses, churches and individuals,” Kath said.

These donations continue to pay for the food transportation from Eau Claire. The food is donated from businesses/stores.

“It’s impacting 300 families a month,” said Kath. “Thank goodness for stores’ donations.”

Kath encourages people to join the American Legion Auxiliary Post 320. They must be related to a veteran or active military person.

People never know what they will receive each month in Humbird. Occasionally, there is pet food. According to Kath, there are vegetables, bakery and dry goods.

“It helps people through one week to the next,” Kath said. “Kings & Queens, Bar and Grill in Humbird has helped by providing water, plastic bags and finding volunteers. We always need volunteers—the more the merrier.”

Cyndy Wolfgram was one of the first volunteers. She greeted people in their vehicles and recorded the number of families needing food.

“We don’t ask for names or incomes,” Wolfgram said. “We get to know these people. The feeling we get from helping other people is rewarding. We’re doing something worthwhile.”

Wolfgram encourages people to pick up for other families.

“We had a 90-year-old volunteer who picked up food for several families,” said Wolfgram. “The food we get is meat, cheese, salad, vegetables, fruit, crackers, or cereal, sometimes party trays. A lot comes from Festival Foods. You never know what you’re going to get.”

The Feed My People Food Bank delivers food the second and fourth Tuesdays every month.

For more information or to mail a donation, contact Cheryl Kath, W12384 E. Gilroy Rd, Humbird, WI 54746 or email KC189707@gmail.com.
