Wedekind, Richard (1 December 1887 - 4 July 1974)

A native of the Town of Grant, Richard Wedekind of Neillsville, died July 4 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, at the age of 86. Funeral services were held Monday from the United Church of Christ with the Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Burial followed in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Georgas Funeral Home.

Born December 1, 1887, in the Town of Grant and educated in schools there, Mr. Wedekind was the son of Wilhelm and Matelda (Schultz) Wedekind. He farmed and worked in the logging industry in Minnesota and Wisconsin, then returned to the home farm which he operated for over 60 years. The farm is now operated by his sons.

His marriage to the former Ida Luck took place April 26, 1916, in Neillsville. Mrs. Wedekind preceded her husband in death on May 1, 1965. During his lifetime, Mr. Wedekind served as treasurer of the Washington School board for several terms.

Surviving are seven children: Mrs. Clarence (Anita) Miller and harry and Raymond Wedekind of Neillsville, Mrs. Leona Damon of Rothschild, Mrs. Ruby Waulters and Mrs. Ernest (Lillian) Ewert of Milwaukee and Miss Arlene Wedekind of Neillsville; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Shaw of Neillsville and Mrs. Alvina Reikoff of Milwaukee; and 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were: Joe Kurasz, Leonard Drescher, Joe Struensee, Charles Meier, Allen Crockett and Wilbert Henchen.

Mrs. Edison Mathis sang “What a Friend we have in Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art”. Mrs. James Spangler was the organist.

Those from out of town who attended the services were Mrs. Leona Damon and Ms. Ella Weisenberger, Wausau; Mrs. Ruby Waulters, Karen and Robin, Mrs. Alvina Reikoff and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Kauten, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ewert, Cudahy; Mr. and Mrs. David Hopfer, Sheila and Aric, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Becker, Wisconsin Rapids; Mrs. Clara Wagner, Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lowe, Olathe, Ks.; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Miller and Tracie, Sparta; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wucherpfennig, Marshfield; and Mr. and Mrs. Victor Anderson, Chili.
