Eli T. Parkhill, who served as a corporal in the 15th New York volunteer Engineers before settling in the town of Hull in 1873, seems to exemplify the character of Civil War veterans who live in this area.

According to his 1888 obituary, the local schools held him in such high regard, they closed the day of his funeral and hung their flags at half mast.

“During Mr. Parkhill’s fifteen years residence in the town of Hull, he has ever been recognized as a man of sterling integrity; though eccentric in many of his ways, he was strictly honest, would wrong no man so much as a penny’s worth,” it reads. “He had many friends; in fact, those who were acquainted with him were glad to call him friend.”
