Stendel, Gerald "Fritz" R. (16 MAR 1923 - 9 MAR 2009)

Gerald "Fritz" R. Stendel, age 85, of Jump River, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2009 at Red Cedar Medical Center in Menomonie.

Services will be held Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Hannibal, with Pastor Bradley Carloss officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Nebo Cemetery in Jump River, with full military graveside rites performed by the VFW Hugh Warner Post No. 2977. Friends and family may call from 9 a.m. until service time at the church.

Plombon Funeral Service of Gilman is assisting the family with arrangements.

Fritz was born March 16, 1923 in Medford to the late Fred and Esther (Kleiber) Stendel. He attended Medford and Jump River elementary schools and graduated from Hannibal High School. Fritz then served his country in the United States Marines during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.

In 1947 he was united in marriage to Mathilda Meyer. They farmed in the Jump River area until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church and through the years he served as a church elder, worked with 4-H school projects, was a director on the Sheldon Co-op Board, town assessor, a member of VFW Hugh Warner Post No. 2977 and was an emergency fire warden for 40 years.

Fritz enjoyed his family, friends, playing cards, draft horses and hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence "Sam," Christian "Bud;" and eight sisters, Frieda, Julia, Martha, Lily, Viola, Francis, Margaret "Peg" and Alvina.
