Loyal American Legion is honoring Dale Beyer this week.

Dale grew up in Riplinger. He went to Unity Elementary and graduated from Colby High School in 1986. Dale enlisted into the Air Force in 1986 and in December of 1986 left for basic training at Lacklan Air Force Base in San Antonio, Tex. He was there for eight weeks and then went to Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois for advance training in structural aircraft repair. Dale was stationed in Illinois for three to four months. After Dale finished his training, he was then stationed at Loring Air Force base in Maine.

When Dale enlisted, he was still in high school and he and other local people that had also enlisted, had taken a bus to Minneapolis for their physicals. It was on the bus that Dale met a girl, Joanne Bauer, from Loyal. They later married and both were stationed in Maine.

While Dale was in Maine, he had been deployed several places -- Azores Islands, which are out in the Atlantic Ocean, England, New Mexico, and Washington. Dale was sent to Diego Garcia during Desert Storm.

When Dale and Joanne lived in Maine they were within walking distance of the Canadian border. The annual snowfall for Maine was 110 inches, and it was very cold. They had two children in Maine, and after four years and five months, they moved back to Loyal. Once settled in Loyal, Dale and Joanne had two more children.

Dale First worked for a heating contractor and then Skelgas for two years. In 1995, Dale started at Car Quest in Marshfield, and is currently working there. Dale has been a member of the Loyal Legion for 25 years. The Loyal American Legion and Auxiliary are always looking for new members to help our local veterans and our Loyal community. To be eligible to join the Legion you must have served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard at these times: April 6, 1917-Nov. 11, 1918; Dec. 7, 1941-Dec. 31, 1946; June 25, 1950-Jan. 31, 1955; Dec. 22, 1961-May 7, 1975; Aug. 24, 1982-July 31, 1984; Dec. 20, 1989-Jan. 31, 1990; Aug. 2, 1990-Cessation of hostilities as determined by the U.S. Government.
