Memories of 64 years ago were the topic of discussion Thursday afternoon when
the graduating class of 1910 from the Unity High School held a reunion. The
event was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Erarl Sieber, son-in-law and daughter
of Mrs. Walby Gerdes, one of the class members.
There were six members in the class, four are still living. One was unable to
attend the reunion.
Those attending were Mrs. Hilda (Johnson) Justman and Herman Francen, both of
Unity, and Mrs. Walby(Johnson) Gerdes of Neillsville.
Unable to attend was Theodore Allain, now living in Richland Center.
Deceased members of the class are Carl Nelson and Elizabeth Salter.
Mrs. Justman and Mr. Francen remained in the Unity area, and Mrs. Gerdes had
been a resident of Spokeville for many years, where she and her husband, the
late Carl Gerdes, operated a store and feed and lumber business.
The class of 1910 was the last to graduate from the frame building, before a new
school was constructed.
Their class flower was the lily of the valley; the colors, blue and gold; and
their class motto was, "Climb Though the Rocks Be Rugged."
Mr. Francen had a "motto" of his own, "Three young roosters and three young hens
made up the class of 1910," he said.
