Flynn to be Honored By Neillsville Legion (Flynn - 2019)

Dave Flynn will be one of three area veterans honored by the Neillsville Legion post.
Flynn was born in Kaukauna and attended grade school in Appleton. He graduated from Appleton High School in 1974.
He joined the U.S. Navy Seabees in June 1974. He had basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. He later went to Port Hueneme, California, for equipment operator school. His first duty station was the Naval Security Station at Washington, D.C. He was there from November 1974 to July 1976. He was then stationed with the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74, which was ported in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was then deployed to detachment at Diego Garcia, a U.S. military base on an atoll in the central Indian Ocean, for nine months.
Flynn then returned to his home port for five months and was deployed again to Diego Garcia with the advanced party main battalion.
Flynn was discharged from the Navy in June 1978 as a second-class petty officer. He went to work in the Appleton area as an equipment operator for two years until the recession started.
After being unemployed, Flynn joined the U.S. Air Force in 1980. He was sent to Loring Air Force Base in Maine, where he stayed until 1982. He then went to Eielson Air Force Base in Alabama until 1987. He was then sent to McConnell Air Forcer Base in Kansas, where he was until 1993.
Flynn was deployed to Saudi Arabia twice and to Maron Air Base in Spain in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. His fourth duty station was Gila Bend, Arizona, at the Barry Goldwater Bombing and Gunnery Base. He was there until 1994.
His final duty was at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. He retired as a master sergeant in June 1994. He had 21 years of active duty, receiving many medals for his service along the way.
After his discharge, Flynn accepted a job at the city of Neillsville, where he is still employed, as the director of public service. He has two daughters, Sara and Katie, and two grandsons. He enjoys hunting, fishing and woodworking.
Flynn will be honored with Dave McDonald and Armon Luchterhand this Monday, April 1, at the American Legion Post 73, 6 Boon Boulevard, Neillsville. A social hour starts at 4:30 p.m. and there will be a potluck at 5:30 p.m.
