The Loyal School District has ended its search for a new 7-12 grade principal.
Doug Dieckman will start as the 7-12 principal July 1.
Dieckman, who has 26 years combined experience as a technology education teacher
and then as a school counselor, is excited to take on an administrative role.
“I’m looking forward to impacting education on a different level as I work with
the staff, the community, families and students,” he said.
Dieckman possesses a bachelor’s degree in technology education and a master’s
degree in school counseling, both from UW-Stout. He earned his administrator
certification from St. Mary’s University in Winona, MN.
Dieckman taught tech. ed. at Bruce starting in 1994 and spent 15 years there. He
then served as school counselor for the Ladysmith School District for grades six
through 12 and is in his 11th year there. Although Dieckman has not specifically
held an administrative position, he has acted as principal at times if the
Ladysmith principal had to be absent.
After receiving his principal license in 2018, Dieckman sought the next step in
his professional career.
“It’s been my desire the last three-to-four years to get into administration, so
I went ahead and got my license and then the past couple years I’ve been looking
for administrative positions,” said Dieckman.
He added that since his youngest daughter is a senior in high school this year
and will be leaving home, he and his wife broadened the geographical range of
their search. He is excited for the opportunity to work at Loyal.
“I hope to effect change that will benefit the district. But I plan to take a
methodical approach that has the kids’ best interest in mind,” he said. “I’m
looking forward to working with adults to mold and shape a sound education
system. And Loyal has some great things already in place.”
One area Dieckman wants to focus on as principal is different styles of
instruction and assessment. He said that during the interview process, there was
a lot of discussion about professional learning communities (PLCs). The district
started to implement PLCs this school year and Dieckman has experience with
them.
“It will be great to unfold my experiences to eager staff members,” he said.
Dieckman is also looking forward to meeting and working with students. He has
extensive experience working with young people. Besides his capacities as a
teacher and counselor, he’s coached for 25 years. He’s been head coach or
assistant coach for football and baseball and an assistant coach for basketball.
He’s also coached youth sports teams after school and during the summertime.
Additionally, he has served at a youth center that offers tutoring.
“I like the interaction with kids and the fun,” Dieckman said.
Dieckman also has experience in community relations as he organized an annual
environmental day for middle school students in conjunction with city and county
government departments.
Dieckman is married to his wife, Megan, who is a school principal for a Catholic
school. They have three children: Darek, who attends Viterbo University for
marketing; Jared, who is studying pre-physical therapy through the Reserve
Officer Training Corps program at UW-La Crose; and Emma, who plans to attend
UW-La Crosse and study in the pre-physician assistant program.
Dieckman’s hire completes somewhat of a re-organization of the district’s
administrative staff. After previous district administrator Cale Jackson
resigned last summer, former Edgar Superintendent Mark Lacke was hired to fill
the void and has served as interim district administrator. He will finish out
the 2019-20 school year in that role. Earlier this year, current 7-12 grade
principal Chris Lindner was named to be district administrator, starting with
the 2020-21 school year. Lindner will officially take on the district
administrator role July 1.
