Greenwood Milk Products to start cheese production

By Peter Spicer

Greenwood Milk Products, a division of Grassland Dairy Products, will soon begin operations at the former Land O’ Lakes building in downtown Greenwood.

Greenwood Milk Products will begin production in early September and will employ 10 workers, including two cheese-makers, an evaporator and a lab technician.

The company will produce 500-pound barrel cheese for buyers, who have already signed on to purchase cheese.  Cheddar, Parmesan and specialty cheeses will be sold.

Several million dollars of improvements were made to the building, said Assistant Fluid Manager Wendy Bautch. The building must meet USDA standards before beginning operations.

Greenwood Milk Products employed local workers to complete painting, construction work, carpeting, welding and plumbing at the building.  Some of those employees will be hired to make repairs once the business is up and running at the 42,000 square foot building, said Bautch.

The former Land O’ Lakes Inc. building will soon be the site of Greenwood Milk Products, scheduled to begin operating this September.  Cheese will be produced for buyers at Greenwood Milk Products.
