The 1945-46 basketball season was begun immediately after the last football game. Twenty of our ready, willing and able high school fellows reported for practice.  The job of coaching was done very ably by Mr. Deucker. 

 

On November 20, we played our first game with Colby, which we won.  This win boosted our morale to such an extent that on the following week we journeyed to Greenwood and won our second game of the season. We bow our heads in shame to mention the next game, for it was with Abbotsford and much to our distress, we were vanquished.  We went home and practiced hard and ventured to Withee to bring home another victory. 

 

The next game being our first home game, we were able to satisfy our fames by defeating Colby. The game was attended by a large and enthusiastic crowd. Our next game, Thorpe, found us defeated by the cardinals but with Christmas vacation coming, we knew the team would get rested up and come back with a new pep and energy. 

 

After vacation, our first game was with Stanley in which we lost. Stanley seems to be our hard luck team or perhaps it was too much Christmas vacation.

 

Greenwood played here the following week in a non-conference game and on the 30^th of the month, we played Withee here and gained another victory for O.H.S.

 

The following week we made the long trip to Neillsville to witness a heart-break of a game for us. There were many fouls and hard feelings but al seemed to recover for our next game which was Abbotsford here.  We had our revenge for our earlier defeat at their hand and made a win.

 

In another home game, we came back to defeat Neillsville with doubts as to who was the best team and felt much relieved. Our next game was with Stanley and was very disappointing for us, for we had big plans for our placing in the league.

 

In our last game of the season, we met Thorp on our own floor and in a thriller of a game, won.  The old fight and spirit came to life in the boys and everyone present felt the tremendous tension. It was only after an over-time that we were able to come through with a top score.

 

We attended the Cloverbelt tournament as the third place team in the Eastern division, after winning the toss with Neillsville. Sorry to say, we were defeated by Boyd by two points.  Next came the district tournament in which we won our first game with Unity and were beaten by Stratford in the second.  Four seniors will be missed next year, Kenny Clifton, Hank Mauel, Pete McMillan and Dick Needham. Next year will see the rise of some very promising young players and assures us much success.  GOOD LUCK KIDS!

Robert Mattson; “Bob,” Center, Sophomore.  Calm and cool in the tight spots, has just what it takes. 

 

Kenneth Clifton; “Kenny,” Left End, Senior. A read end….. when he tackles it’s for keeps and “no foolin,’” a pass snatcher. Too bad he is a senior. 

 

LeRoy Parve; - Left Tackle, Junior.  A good linesman, will be valuable next year.

 

Galen Parkinson; “Parkie,” Left Guard, Junior. Always in the pile ups, is really in there fighting. 

 

William Maurina; “Bill,” Right Guard, Junior. A real fighter, tough, ruff and always ready. Helped to give us our strong line this season. 

 

Henry Mauel; “Hank,” Right End, Senior. All Conference End, has the height for the passes, will be much missed next year. 

 

Peter McMillan; “Pete,” Quarterback, Senior. Our captain and strong man, played grand ball throughout season, will be much missed next year.

 

Robert Devine; “Bob,” Left Halfback, Sophomore. A real runner, speed and plenty of the old spark.

 

Ernest Gay; “Ernie,” Right Halfback, Sophomore. Our speed demon, like a bullet, plenty of drive and spirit will no doubt be a flash next year.

 

Frank Hoeper; “Frankie,” Fullback, Sophomore. Another of those Sophomore “Wizzies,” can plunge through that line like a two ton tank, they don’t come big enough to stop him.

 

Allen Fritz; End, Junior. Proved by his action that he has what it takes, will be much needed next year.

 

Russell Garfield; Tackle, Junior. Anxious and willing to give the team his best, showed up well this season. 

 

Peter Devine; “Pete,” Halfback, Freshman. The Freshman wonder, speed and spirit that makes a good player, by his senior year will probably be under contract to the Green Bay Packers.

 

Eugene Johnson; “Gene,” Quarterback, Junior. Does a fine job, shows plenty of sense in calling those signals. 

 

Earl Johnson; End, Junior. A hard worker, will be much needed next year.

 

Carl Harms; Back, Freshman. A fighting back, does a fin job and will develop into a regular wonder man.

 

Keith Welker; Back, Freshman. Small but plenty tough, watch his smoke in the coming years.
