Passenger List of the
Bark Washington

16th of September in 1840

In 1986, I received a copy of the passenger list of the Bark Washington from the U.S. National Archives. This is the passenger list for the journey that brought the Frederick & Helene Sternitzky family to the United States.  The original passenger list is handwritten and difficult to read.  Below is a transcript of the passenger list (as best as I can read it.  The Sternitzky family members are passenger numbers 73 to 78.

Note: a bark (sometimes spelled barque) is a type of sailing ship. Washington was a popular name for ships. I have not yet found a picture of this particular ship.

There are two additional columns on the list that I have not shown above.  One colume is for noting those passengers who died on the voyage; this column had no entries.  Another column lists the country that the passengers intended to become inhabitants of; this column lists Western States for all passengers.
