Company C., 8th Wis. Regiment Infantry Civil War Roster
With the relatively simple recognition of a single, family found Civil War veteran continuing to snowball, members of the "Old Abe" 8th WI, Co. C Civil War Re-enactment will now be joining Thorp's July 4th ceremony this Tuesday. Jim Reynen, who portrays Lt. Robin Tobinette, a union soldier whose artillery unit supported the 8th WI regiment at6 the Civil War battle at Corinth, Mississippi, contacted Thorp's Bob Zukowski to request his unit's involvement in the area's special day.
With the relatively simple recognition of a single, family found Civil War veteran continuing to snowball, members of the "Old Abe" 8th WI, Co. C Civil War Re-enactment will now be joining Thorp's July 4th ceremony this Tuesday. Jim Reynen, who portrays Lt. Robin Tobinette, a union soldier whose artillery unit supported the 8th WI regiment at6 the Civil War battle at Corinth, Mississippi, contacted Thorp's Bob Zukowski to request his unit's involvement in the area's special day.
The re-enactment unit which was formally established in 1975 and supported by former Governor, Tommy Thompson, has asked to bring a color guard to the ceremony. They will be using an authentic 14 Pounder James Ordinance Rifle, the same cannon often used in Civil War battles.
The 8th WI Co C. Eagle Regiment unit is known as one of the five organizations in the country permitted to have in its possession a bald eagle. This particular stuffed bird is on long-term loan to the unit from the Department of Natural Resources and federal government and is often used during their re-enactments, both as a standing symbol of patriotism and because the original Old Abe unit actually ha a bald eagle as its mascot.
In addition to the Civil War veterans that will be recognized from the East Thorp Cemetery, Zukowiski has announced that several more Civil War veterans will be honored. They include: Johannes G. Audorff, Co. E. 54th NY Cav., Butler Cemetery; William Bryant / Buysalt / Buycite, Co. G, 5th WI Inf., St. Bernard Cemetery; William Colby, Co. K, 25th WI Inf., Sylvan Cemetery; George W. Courter, Co. B, 27th WI Inf., Sylvan Cemetery; Patrick J. Cusik, Co. H, 19th NY Cav., St. Bernard Cemetery; Vincent H. Girar / Jerad, unknown unit, Eidsvold Cemetery; William Jerad, Co. F 10 NY.
Members Help Prepare for Soldier Recognition
Thorp American Legion members took time away from their personal responsibilities to help prepare the gravesites for the upcoming re-commemoration of the area's Civil War veterans. In all, more than 50 area Civil War veterans will be recognized this Tuesday, July 4. An area Civil War re-enctment unit, Old Abe unit, 8th WI Co., C has asked to participate in the all-encompassing recognition, slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. at Throp's Veterans Park on South Washington Street.

Reynen, who is also a member of the
Sons of Union Veterans, says his unit believes the upcoming Thorp event will
recognize the largest number of Civil War veterans ever honored at once.
"We will be honored to be a part of Thorp's commemoration." Reynen said
proudly. Thorp's event is scheduled to begin at Veterans' Park on Thorp's
North Washington Street at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 4.
