On Tuesday, July 24, Doug and Cheryl Niemuth, owners of the Thorp SuperValu, received a surprise visit from Brandon Scholz of the Wisconsin Grocer’s Association who was in Thorp to present the Niemuth’s with the 2010 Excellence in Operation Award.

Kevin Mahney, Regional Manager of SuperValu Stores, submitted the nomination letter to the Wisconsin Grocer’s Association earlier this year, and after reading through lots of nominations and the Board voting on the final winner, Doug and Cheryl were chosen to receive this honor.  “This was one of the best nominations I ever read”, said Scholz.  “Doug and Cheryl are being honored with this award for their motivation, leadership, and their work in the community.”

With members of the community, employees, vendors, and City Administrator Randy Reeg in attendance, Scholz spoke of the local grocery store’s quality service and the importance it has in the community.  “What a store does for a small community is unbelievable, just ask the communities that no longer have a local grocery store.  Doug and Cheryl provide a great service and we need to thank them,” said Scholz.  “We are proud to have them in the membership.”

Doug Niemuth began his career in grocery in 1975, working as a stocker at age 16. Through the years, Niemuth worked his way up as dairy and frozen foods manager, lock-up manager, and hauler for Carl’s Red Owl.  After nine years, Niemuth transferred to the Clintonville Pick ‘N Save, where for 14 years, he managed the produce department.  He later stepped in, working directly under the owner.  There, Niemuth met his wife Cheryl.  In 1998, Doug and Cheryl bought a store in Mosinee and in 2004, bought the Thorp store.

Currently, with Doug managing the meat, grocery, and dairy sections and Cheryl managing the deli, bakery, and front of store, the Niemuth’s have created a local business that Thorp can be proud of.
