GREETINGS TO THORP ALUMNI

The Thorp Alumni Association wishes a happy and healthy 2006 to everyone!

In a recent trip to St. Louis, time was spent visiting with Phyllis Hastreiter Velcheck, a 1940 graduate of Thorp High School. Phyllis had been married to Arnold Velcheck, a 1930 graduate who passed away in August of 2001. Phyllis and Arnie had eight children, thirteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

When asked of her high school days, her eyes lit up, as Phyllis loved talking about her time at THS. Her best friends were Elaine Larson Below, Class of ’40, and Florence Wiernasz Asselin, Class of ’40. She spoke of all the wonderful times they spent together and how they continue to see each other occasionally.

Phyllis was active in the Glee Club, the Drama Club, Basketball, Forensics, the G.A.A., the Tennis Club, and the S.A.F. She won the Extemporaneous Reading Cup as a junior, was Prom Queen, served on the Seniorian staff, acted in class plays, and was Homecoming Attendant as a senior. We had a wonderful visit with Phyllis.

In checking the graduating classes from 1951 through 1960, the valedictorian and salutatorian from each class were named. They were:

Year Valedictorian  Salutatorian
1951  Patricia Ciolkosz Ione Van Ert
1952 Patricia Kenney Rosella Dulek
1953 Julia Kaminski Wanda Johnson
1954 Genevieve Guell Roger Turenne
1955 Ruth Bogumill Richard Alger
1956 David Guell Darlene Gulczynski
1957 Lola Biddle John Klouda
1958 Gerald Boardman Brian Hendricks
1959 Karen Boardman Arthur Flashinski
1960 Dale Ebben Theresa Czahor

Reminders

Every student who attended Thorp High School from 1891 through 2005 is listed in the newly updated 2005 Thorp Alumni Directory. They are listed in alphabetical order in the back of the directory and by class, beginning with the class of 1891.

The 2005 Alumni Directory is a wonderful piece of alumni history and a valuable tool for each person who attended THS. It not only lists all the graduates, it also has listings of every student who attended THS whether they graduated or not, as well as the most current address provided to the TAA.

The new directories are available by contacting the TAA, PO Box 75, Thorp, WI 54471-0075; by calling Ann Huls at 715-669-3698; or by calling Angie Teclaw at 715-669-7140. Directories are also available for purchase ($10.00) at the following Thorp businesses: M&I Bank, Northwestern Bank, Associated Bank, State Bank of Withee, Kari’s Koffee, The Thorp Courier, and the Silver Dollar.

The 2006 All-Thorp Alumni Reunion will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2006 at Thorp High School. The display of memorabilia, including new items, is a display everyone who attended THS should see.

Even if your class is having a reunion on a different date or on the same date/weekend as the All Thorp Reunion but at a different location, you still are invited to the July 1st 2006 reunion. You will see people you knew from other classes and will have a very enjoyable time.

Also, if you did not attend THS, but your spouse did, you too are encouraged to attend the reunion. You are invited and you will be welcomed.

Remember, for those organizing class reunions, class lists and address labels are available by contacting the TAA or by calling Ann Huls or Angie Teclaw (phone numbers listed above).

1957 Thorp High School Alumni

We were recently informed by the class of 1957 organizers that their class will be attending the All-Thorp Alumni Reunion in 2007. They will be getting together as a class on Saturday at noon and then will attend the TAA dinner at Thorp High School in the afternoon and then attended (attend) the TAA dinner at the high school. They told us that it was a great way for the class to get together and renew memories.

Thorp Alumni Newsletter

Clarice “Dolly” Hubbard ’38 is the editor of the Thorp Alumni Newsletter, which is printed in late June and distributed at the annual reunion. We are asking our alumni to send newsworthy items about yourself, your family, or other alums. Please don’t think that others aren’t interested in reading about you and your family. The newsletter has proven to be very popular with our alums. Send your news or letter to the TAA, PO Box 75, Thorp, WI 54771-0075.
