100 Years Ago (1906)

Register of Deeds Oscar Frickie gives the number of marriages recorded in Clark County during 1905 as 189; births 434; deaths 194; for 1904: marriages, 182; births 461; deaths 170.

The Thorp Courier published weekly at $1.50 per year. Newspaper press operated by an electric motor.

A new orchestra has recently been organized in this village and under the efficient leadership of Herman Thiedemann, the boys are progressing finely. Following is the membership comprising the new organization: 1st violin -- Jos. Switalski; 1st Coronet -- Louis Walsdorf; Solo Coronet-- Lee Snyder; 2nd Coronet -- Wm. Pope Jr.; 1st Clarinet -- Louis Wilson; Solo Clarinet -- John Poppe; 2nd Clarinet -- Louis Howard; Bass -- Hugo Holzhausen; Trombone -- Jos. Klouda Jr.; Drums and Traps -- J. H. Gorman; Piano -- Miss Mayo Roth.

75 Years Ago (1931)

Father Balcer, pastor of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, at Lublin, died at St. Josephs' Hospital in Chippewa Falls. No report of the cause of death is at hand.

J.O. Rasmussen sold his restaurant property last week to Stanley Moczarny, who has already take possession. Mr. Moczarny's son-in-law Elmer Johnson, is making arrangements for opening a bakery in the building in the near future.

Thorp Meat Market: Steak, Round, Sirloin, Porterhouse, per lb., 20¢. Beef Roast, per lb., 12-1/2¢. Spare Ribs, lb., 12¢.

The Hewitt Variety Store opened for trade last Wednesday and was visited by large crowds during their opening sale.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Scout, Anthony Sneider, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sneider of Thorp, will b presented his Eagle Scout Award at a Court of Honor to be held at the High School Auditorium at Thorp, on February 7th.

Lyle Christensen, Thorp Male Chorus governor, announces all plans ar complete for 29 members of the Male chorus under the direction of Mr. R. Brede to take part in the St. Paul winter carnival weekend. The Thorp Male Chorus will join other choruses of the Northwest district of Associated Male Choruses of America.

Papers were filed for Mayor early last week for Joseph Tobola. Dr. W. F. Nolecheck, present Mayor, is vacationing in Florida and previous to his leaving indicated he was not a candidate this year.

25 Years Ago (1981)

By a unanimous 4-0 vote, the Thorp City Council hired a Stevens Point engineering firm to begin the process of setting up special tax districts in Thorp.

As February 8 to 14 marks the 71st anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, Thorp Mayor David Keating signed a proclamation in honor of the 1,500 men and women who are volunteer leaders in the Chippewa Valley Council.

Charles S. Senn has joined the Gharles G. Senn Law Office in Thorp, replacing Fred Kowalski who has become corporation counsel for Forest County.

A surprise birthday party was held at the Thorp Dairy Bar for Mrs. Josephine Rogalski on January 31st, celebrating her 90th birthday.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Karen Flashinski, daughter of Peter and Bonnie Flashinski of Thorp, received a 3rd place bronze medallion for her poster in the Knights of Columbus Annual Christmas Poster contest.

At a meeting held by Waste Management, Inc. at the Thorp City Hall on Jan. 22, residents of the township of Reseburg voiced concerns about a landfill in their township.

Thomas F. Tuttle, MD, has joined the staff at Victory Medical Clinic--Stanley Center.
