100 Years Ago (1906)

Stanley Sunbeams—The school board has resolved that any pupil who shall take any tobacco, pipe, or cigarette paper on to the school premises shall be suspended.

The Thorp Telephone Co. completed arrangements last week with the Reseburg Farmer’s Telephone Line for joint service and the two systems have already been connected and service established. The new directory, just issued, now included sixty-eight village phones.

W. S. Parks, who recently received a new 260 egg capacity incubator, started the same in operation this week. Herman Stracker also has his 229 incubator in operation.

75 Years Ago (1931)

The farmhouse on the Geo. Alger farm in the Town of Worden was destroyed by fire during the noon hour on Monday.

Roger Creek and Town Line—Wm. Jordan and Louis Qualheim and son have been granted honor certificates or diplomas by the National Dairy Association for having dairy herds, which averaged over 300 pounds of butter fat per cow.

Around the Corner—The home belonging to Joe Wincek was destroyed by fire at an early hour on Saturday morning.

By virtue of their easy 17-11 victory from Arcadia in the second elimination contest at Eau Claire last Wednesday night the Cardinals of Thorp High School will be represented at the district tournament for the first time in over ten years.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Seven Clark County men have been inducted into the Army and Navy this month. Galen O. Erdman and DeLyle Singstock, both of Colby, and Richard M. Malecki, Albert L. Wink Jr., and Leonard P. Zukowski, all of Thorp are in the Army. Raymond B. Gutowski of Thorp and Ralph L. Sossaman of Colby are taking boot training at Great Lakes, IL.

The Board of Directors of Thorp Finance Corporation voted at their monthly meeting held Monday evening, March 12, to increase quarterly dividend rate from 35¢ per quarter to 50¢ per quarter on common stock payable March 15.

The blowing of the whistle Thursday morning signified the end of the six-week long strike at the Stanley Division of the Acme Steel Co.

Pvt. Marion F. Karpinski, 26, son of Mrs. Mary J. Karpinski, Thorp, is scheduled to leave the U. S. for Germany late in March as part of Operations Gyroscope, the Army’s unit rotation plan.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Declining enrollment in the Thorp Public School system forced the board of education to formally trim the high school teaching staff by one and a half positions.

Jim Pabich and Carol Chmelik showed off a 205 pound cake that was baked and built to commence Pabich’s Supermarket 6th anniversary.

Mr. Jeff Bates, of the American Family Insurance in Thorp, has been named FBLA Businessperson of the Year, 1981.

Thorp’s Cory Walters, a senior, advanced to the state gymnastics meet in Waukesha after placing in the top five in four events in the sectional gymnastics meet held at Thorp High.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Alison Harycki, a junior at Thorp High School, attended the Dorian Band Festival February 25 and 26, held in Decorah, Iowa at Luther College.

The coach and player sections for the 20th Annual Wisconsin Shrine Bowl have been made. The area athletes who have the honor of competing in this year’s game are Thorp High School’s Jeff Hazuga and Stanley-Boyd High School’s Todd Goodman and Tim Haas.
