100 Years Ago (1906)

Stanley Sunbeams—Mayor Crane, at his inauguration speech, recommended to the city council an extension of the sewer system, the macadamizing of the two main streets and the installation of a municipal lighting plant.

A large number of Polish settlers have arrived during the past week and have located on lands in the Town of Roosevelt.

C. F. Rainey has purchased the B. C. Werner Drug Store at Black River Falls and will shortly remove to that city, with all his family, to reside.

Mat Greisch, Val Prybylski, John Verkuilen and Geo. Burke are present members of the county board.

75 Years Ago (1931)

A Soo Line special passenger train carrying the King and Queen of Siam and their Royal Party went through the village about 11 o’clock Monday night on the heels of the Limited No. 4, bound for New York and Washington D. C.

Roger Creek and Town Line—Ed Meadtke has purchased the Deerbrook Cheese Factory and store in Edson, of Dan Klein, and put the factory again in operation. Mr. Meadtke was the original owner of this property.—The Star Calf Club has been organized in this neighborhood. Everett Starks is leader, Arthur Samuelson, president, John Qualheim, vice president and Philip McCaffery, secretary and treasurer.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Clark County’s first two traffic deaths, of 1956 came in separate accidents on Highway 29 on opposite sides of the county within seven hours of each other.

Anton Gulcynski received the contract for Mail Messenger at the Thorp Post Office and started carrying mail between the Post Office and the Soo Depot on Monday, April 23rd.

The junior class of Thorp High School will present their Junior Promenade on April 28 in the beautifully decorated high school gymnasium. The crowing (crowning) of Prom King and Queen, Dan Winger and Jean Mattes, will climax this festive occasion.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Julie A. Slipek, Dennis Postler and Jayne Giwojna received recognition in the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 1981 History Essay Contest.

More than 70 senior citizens turned out to hear plans for the Thorp Area Senior Citizens Center Inc. being formed. Delton Ebben was elected president of the Thorp Area Senior Citizens Center, Inc.

The Thorp High School Junior Prom court consists of Jennie Kryzanski and Darrel Haas, Dawn Benzschawel and Frank Waszinski, Prom Queen Kim Jacque and Prom King Mike Lewien, Becky Turner and Dennis Wojt and Renata Palms and Bob Szymanski.

Thorp’s star runner, Cheri Slowiak, broke her own school record in the 1,600 meter run, April 21 at the Altoona quadrangular.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Randy Mertens of Cloverleaf Cheese, Inc., Stanley captured Best-In-The-World honors at the World Championship Cheese Contest which was held March 5-7 in Green Bay, WI for his Monterey Jack Longhorn.

Joe Frenette and Luke Seaman participated along with over 800 other athletes in the 1996 Wisconsin Special Olympics State Indoor Sports Tournament, April 12-14.

Jessica Milas of Thorp has been named a United States National Award winner in Science.
