100 Years Ago (1906)

The public library is now located at the high school building and it is gratifying to learn that although the library building was badly damaged by the fire, the damage done to the books was comparatively small.

The N-W-L Co. is to build a large brick store building on the west side of Willard Street, near to the old site. The Co. is now keeping its store in the old Rabanstorf building on the corner of Emery and Bartlett Streets.

Some three hundred persons crowded into the opera house on Saturday evening last to witness Barnesdale’s electric moving picture entertainment.

Paul Zwolinski sold the two lots west of his saloon, including a barn, to Jos. Morgan last week. Consideration $800

W. P. Weisbrod and family have arrived from Amherst and Mr. Weisbrod took possession of H. Friess’ meat market, which he purchased recently.

75 Years Ago (1931)

Cantaloupe, extra good quality, 2 for 25¢ fresh tomatoes, now at 11¢, peanut butter kisses, 10¢ lb

Notice to Farmers! We are selling skim milk to farmers for ten cents per 85 lb. can. The price of skim milk powder has been reduced to 3½¢ per pound to all farmers.

The Thorp Dairy Company is now receiving 100,000 pounds of milk daily. A machine is now being installed to cut and wrap butter in quarter pound prints. They are shipping a carload of butter to Philadelphia each week.

50 Years Ago (1956)

The farmhouse of Leon Przybylski, six miles south and three miles east of Thorp, was saved by the rural fire department June 5th.

Graduation exercises are being held June 10 at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Marshfield. Among the graduates are Bernadette Cukla and Rosann Ebben. Both are graduates of Thorp High School.

The eighth grade pupils of St. Hedwig School graduated June 3. Rev. Francis Piekarski presented diplomas before the 9 o’clock Mass at the parish church to thirty-seven graduates, the largest group to graduate since the opening of the school in 1950.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Five young ladies will be competing for the Miss Thorp crown. They are Heidi Baehman, Diane Frinack, Cheryl Koltis, Janice Kotecki and Kim Kudasik.

The controversial high school window project, an energy conservation measure, was narrowly approved by the Thorp Board of Education, Wednesday, May 27, by a 3-2 vote.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Staron, residents of Park Avenue, Stanley, who were married February 18, 1911 at St. Adalbert’s Church in Chicago, IL, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Saturday, May 23, 1981.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Miss Thorp 1996 and her court: Miss Thorp, Kelli Klapatauskas: Princess, Danielle LaVick, First Runner Up and Miss Congeniality, Allison Woods and Second Runner Up, Toni (can’t read the name).

The 1996 Edition of the Allen Bros. Big Top Circus will be in Thorp on Wednesday, June 12th sponsored by the Thorp Jaycees, at Northside Park.
