100 Years Ago (1906)

St. Hedwig’s Polish Church Congregation will give a picnic and fair on their church grounds two miles east of the village on July 4th.

On Monday, 7,446 lbs. of butter were shipped to Chicago and 6,900 lbs. of cheese to Marshfield. These shipments go out regularly every Monday morning during the year, from this station, in refrigerator cars, varying, of course with the seasons.

At a mass meeting of the democrats of Clark County, held at Neillsville, R. B. Salter of this city was chosen chairman, and W. G. Klopf of Neillsville, secretary. The following delegates were elected to represent the county at the democrat state platform convention to be held in Milwaukee, June 27th and 28th. R. B. Salter, John D. McMillan, Dr. P. McKittrick, O. C. Baker, Dr. Richmond, Wm. Huntley, Robert Kurth, Herman Kronschnabl, Mike Prock, Legare Potter.

75 Years Ago (1931)

Chubb A. Lund, A. W. Emerson and Wm. S. Wagner attended the Knights Templar Conclave at Minneapolis on Tuesday as members of the Eau Claire Masonic Band of 60 pieces.

The local Women’s Relief Corps presented the Sons of Veterans Post with a silk flag last Sunday at the George Mathews home in Mitterhoffer.

Anton S. Przybylski and Walter V. Verkuilen have been carrying mail on Routes 2 and 3, while the regular carriers, Louis Papierniak and Fritz Schmidt, are taking their annual vacation.

Roger Creek and Town Line—The controversy over who should teach the Roger Creek school this coming school year was settled last week when the district board contracted with Miss Eleanor Dvorak, of Stanley, to fill the position.

During the early Saturday morning electrical storm the farm home of Hugo Kuehl was struck by lightning, causing considerable damage.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Anthony W. Wink, 33, Town of Reseburg farmer, accidentally drowned in the north fork of the Eau Claire, three miles west of the city at 1:55 a.m., Saturday morning according to Coroner John R. Bergemann.

Lightning struck the John Czech home a week ago Sunday night burning it down.

Corwin C. Guell, prominent lawyer and civic leader of Thorp, has announced that he will be a candidate for Clark County Assemblyman on the Republican ticket.

Warren M. Buckli of Eau Claire has been signed by the Stanley Board of Education as head football coach for next year.

25 Years Ago (1981)

The Thorp Ambulance District received a $5,000 donation in the mail from Lavern Kenney of San Diego, CA. Kenney made the contribution on behalf of her late husband of 52 years, James Kenney and the Chmielewski family of Lublin.

Four tax incremental financing districts were unanimously approved for Thorp by the City Council, June 23, following a public hearing on the matter.

Thorp area residents donated 115 pints of blood, June 23, when the Red Cross Bloodmobile came to town.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Signing of sections of Highway 29 to raise the speed limit will begin Wednesday, June 26. This will raise the speed limit from 55 to 65 miles per hour. The new 65 mile per hour Zone on Highway 29 will run from Highway 124 at Chippewa Falls to Highway 73 at Withee, a distance of 40 miles.
