100 Years Ago (1906)

Stanley Sunbeams—The N-W L. Co’s projected mammoth brick store building, which is expected to be ready for use in October next, will require no less than 800,000 brick.—P. A. and R. R. Williams of Marshfield have purchased a building and lot hear (near) Lien’s store on Bartlett St., in which they have installed a steam printing outfit and will under the management of William Kinney start a newspaper to be called “The Stanley Times”.

The hay crop is about ready for harvesting. The crop is immense.

After a six years struggle on the part of the Polish people in the United States, Pope Pius has granted their petition and Archbishop Josef Weber, Rome, Italy, will come to this country to accept the appointment of quasi-bishop of the Polish Catholic churches here.

This is just the right sized town to settle down in and enjoy life. Everything for the comfort of life can be bought here and $10 will go as far as $25 in larger cities. When you want to leave the farm, come to our town and build a nice comfortable home and be among the best people in the world.

75 Years Ago (1931)

During the past week the weather has been scorching hot, all records of the past having been broken. Thermometers have been registering from 90 to nearly 100 daily. About twenty deaths from the heat wave have taken place in Wisconsin and nearly 300 throughout the country.

The number of horses and mules on farms continues to decrease and there is nothing to indicate when the trend will be checked.

August Kuehl had his Ford car, Model 1929, stolen from in front of his residence on Thursday night. The same car was stolen last year and later found stripped in the Town of Butler. The car was insured against theft.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Finding a dynamite cap resulted in the injury of two Thorp boys while they were playing.

Damage to growing crops as a result of a severe hail storm in the Willard area, may reach thousands of dollars according to preliminary estimates of farmers who suffered heaviest from the storm.

An estimated 85,000 more school children in Wisconsin would receive school milk under a bill passed by the House of Representatives. The bill now goes to the senate.

Floyd Hill, general agent of the George W. Cole 3-Ring Wild Animal Circus was in Thorp yesterday to complete arrangements for the circus to show here on Saturday, July 21.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Bids for more than $310,000 were accepted last Thursday, June 25, for the addition of 10 apartments at Morgan Plaza Elderly Housing by the Thorp Housing Authority.

Mr. and Mrs. John C. Maier celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday, June 21, 1981 beginning with a special mass by Father John Puerner at 12 o’clock at St. Bernard’s-St. Hedwig’s Parish.

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Van Ert celebrated fifty years of marriage on June 6, 1981 with a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Hedwig’s Chapel at 2:45 p.m. with Father Bill Buchman officiating.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Over 35 cars participated in the annual Thorp Lions Club Demo Derby on Sunday. Mark Struensee of Withee was this year’s winner. Kristi Bunnel of Thorp claimed the Powder Puff.
