100 Years Ago (1906)
Stanley Sunbeams—excavations for the foundations of Stanley’s new
passenger depot were commenced.—The Stanley Creamery was reopened last
fall and is now making about 10,000 lbs. of butter per month and each
month is paying to the farmers of this vicinity about $1800.
Ironing day is a dreaded visitation with most housekeepers: the hot,
stifling stove, the running to and fro to change irons, the tremendous
heat radiated by the irons while in use, are all a strain on a woman’s
nerves and vitality. An electric flat-iron eliminates the stove, does
away with the perpetual running to and fro, and it does not radiate any
heat. Won’t you avail yourself of these advantages? Better ask the
electrician, H. Stracker, he will explain and give you (the) price.
Postmaster Geo. B. Parkhill presented this office with a freak in the
egg line, the same being a perfectly formed egg with an inch long handle
at one end. It is quite a curiosity.
75 Years Ago (1931)
Probably the only thing more heartening than to run across and old vest
and find a forgotten dime in the pocket is to run across and old vest
when you need a new seat in your trousers.
R. M. Carlson, of Owen, secured the contract for painting the interior
of the high school building. The total paint job will cost a little over
$800. Louis Rusch is rearranging the lighting system throughout the
building and this will run around $800. Asselin Bros. are remodeling the
gymnasium part.
50 Years Ago (1956)
Henry Nowobielski, 1st vice commander of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118 of
the American Legion took over as Commander of the Post at the regular
meeting.
Louis Kotlowski, who for the past ten years operated a grocery business
in Stanley, has sold his interest in the Stanley IGA supermarket to
Walter Welgos of Lublin.
This month the state motor vehicle department inaugurated a “point
system” under which drivers will receive demerits for court convictions
on moving traffic law violations.
25 Years Ago (1981)
Two Greenwood men were killed and two others injured in a motor vehicle
accident on STH-29, just east of the Clark County Health Care Center
shortly after 12:30 a.m., August 3, 1981.
The Lato Corp. is one of Thorp’s largest employers with a work force of
about 50.
A tractor owned by Don Palmer, Fire No. 528, was heavily damaged when it
caught fire August 2 at bout 4:45 p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ciolkosz celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on
July 14, 1981.
10 Years Ago (1996)
Oakbrook Manor, 206 West Prospect Street, Thorp, WI will participate in
the Wisconsin Health Care Association (WHCA) Super Senior Olympic Games
on August 14.
The Thorp Volunteer Fire Department was called to a barn fire at the Art
Sauer residence.
Among the 1,849 municipalities in Wisconsin, total net property tax
rates for 1996 range from a high of $41.95 to zero according to a report
by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WTA) Madison. The statewide average
is $26.89, down from $28.39 for 1995.
