100 Years Ago (1906)
95 in the shade followed by a refreshing rain!
Louis Kolb is putting the finishing touches on his new residence, one of
the finest in the village.
Colby Phonograph: We saw Thorp by electric light. Yes, Editor Will
Wagner has been saying “come” for several years, so last evening we did
“come” and spent the night with Will and family and enjoyed our
overnight outing very much. Will has a well-equipped printing plant and
is proud of his office and we told him he had a right to be. He prints
his paper on an improved Prouty run by electric motor and is through
before he fairly begins. A nice plant, you bet Will. We are going to
coax our delinquents to help us get a new press and then – bur (but)
don’t wait for that, come down Will.
75 Years Ago (1931)
2 quart Mason jars per dozen $1.15; 1 quart Mason jars per dozen 89¢,
pint jars per dozen 79¢.
“Dry Ice,” a manufactured substance having a temperature as low as 109
degrees below Fahrenheit, and therefore much colder than ordinary ice,
is coming to play an increasingly important part in the sale and
distribution of certain agricultural products.
The new rectory under construction by St. Bernard’s Congregation is
nearing completion. The interior finishing work is well under way and
Father A. M. Muckerheide will soon enjoy a pleasant home.
50 Years Ago (1956)
Charles G. Senn, 30, has opened his Attorney-at-Law office here in the
Papierniak building.
Thorp now has a beautiful new speed-way in its main street. Beware
though, this is what’s expected and the man in the blue uniform will be
ever watchful with his nice book of tickets.
Twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schneider, Stanley, made their
first profession of vows at St. Rose’s Covenant in La Crosse on August
12.
25 Years Ago (1981)
The Thorp Board of Education refused to act Monday, August 17 on an
extra curricular activities code proposed for the high school, telling
high school principal James Conro that it was too severe.
The new building complex at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Neillsville
will be baptized this weekend with the annual Clark County Fair.
Air National Guard Airman Gary L. Ebben, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delton J.
Ebben of 300 W. Birch St., Thorp, has completed Air Force basic training
at Lackland Air Base, Texas.
Some former Thorp residents will be guests on a Saturday morning, August
29, radio talk show to discuss high school athletics. Woody Wall,
brother of Bev Stevens of Thorp, will interview Bob Lesniewski and Arnie
Hoffman.
John M. and Mary H. Lato of Eau Claire celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary on August 8, 1981. They may be remembered here as former
owners of the Red Owl Store, 1951-1953.
10 Years Ago (1996)
Ryan Klanderman received his Eagle Award following an intensive board of
review that was held on May 8, 1996.
Syl Cieslek recently had a letter published in the August 8 issue of USA
Today. Her letter was a call to politicians to stop negative campaigning
and character assassination in the media.
Lou Wickershiem, president/CEO of Occupational Health Systems of
Wisconsin, Inc. (OHS) has been named National Association of Women in
Management Fox Cities Chapter Woman Manager of the year. Lou graduated
from Thorp High School in 1965. She is the daughter of George and
Eleanor Schmidt. |
