100 Years Ago (1906)
Jos. Morgan has opened a grocery store in a portion of
the Forest Queen House building.
Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Bickel arrived here from LaFarge. Mr. Bickel will
have charge of the grammar department of the village schools during the
ensuing year.
J. H. Gorman has just received one of the finest lines of Japanese fancy
goods that have ever been brought to this city.
We study to dress men as well as the very best can be dressed, and to do
it for a small sum with our stylish garments from $10, $12, $14, $15,
$18 and $20. The Boston Store, A. J. Krom, Proprietor.

75 Years Ago (1931)
Frank Siok was burned to death when the barn in which he and three
others were sleeping was destroyed by fire.
Deaths in Clark County in 1930 reached a total of 264, marking an
increase of 19 over the 1929 toll it is announced by the bureau of vital
statistics, state board of health.
Joe Lesneski and Wm. Klouda returned from Camp Douglas where they have
been in training for one month.
The United Super Service Station on Hwy. 29, which handles Pure Oil
Products, has recently installed complete brake testing equipment for
care of all kinds. This device is one of the few in this territory and
is indispensable to the careful driver.
50 Years Ago (1956)
Mike Kramer, Chairman of the committee for the dedication of Thorp’s new
main street announced that an entertaining day has been planned for its
opening day on Saturday afternoon and evening, September 1st.
An outbreak of general vandalism has hit the area south of Thorp it was
reported by Ed Harycki, Chief of Police.
The first play-off game for the Cloverbelt League championship will take
place here this Sunday, September 2nd when the Thorp Cardinals, winners
of the first half of season play and the Abbotsford Guards, winners of
the second half will meet.
A new polio case, the second in Clark County this year, was listed
Tuesday.
25 Years Ago (1981)
The face-lift of the Farmers Mart, Thorp, should be completed by the end
of the next week if the weather cooperates, according to Elden Belanger,
owner of the store.
Clark County authorities are searching for a 73-year-old patient of the
Clark County Health Care Center, Owen, who was reported missing
Saturday, August 22.
Two former Thorp residents have finally been invited to the White House
September 11 to receive a medal of bravery from President Ronald Reagan.
David and Robert Christie won the young American Medal for Bravery after
pulling nine people from a blazing van wreck near the Dug Out Tavern in
Withee Township on August 5, 1975.
10 Years Ago (1996)
On September 3, Leslie Hallin will become the new owner and manager of
Leslie’s Hair Salon, formerly known as Julie’s Beauty Salon, located at
508 West Stanley Street.
Jason Jaskot received his Eagle award follow9ing an intensive board of
review held on August 7, 1996.
Jeff Wittek, son of David and Joanne Wittek was selected from among over
500 contestants to perform at the 1996 Minnesota State Fair singing “The
Change” by Garth Brooks. |
