100 Years Ago (1906)
Humorous Items: A young wit, looking out for mischief endeavored to make
fun of a professor. After badgering him for some time he asked him
whether he could define the word “nothing.”
The professor replied immediately: “Nothing is that which is to be found
in the particular cell of your brain which whould contain intelligence.”
The approach of winter has been noticeable by cold rains during the past
week. No frosts have been experienced yet.
More than fifty persons went to Eau Claire on Monday from here to take
out their second papers before Judge O’Neill and become full-fledged
citizens.
An application for the pardon of Wojech Sowa, who killed city Marshall
Moore of Stanley in 1901, in the Town of Thorp, will be filed with Gov.
Davidson at Madison today.
75 Years Ago (1931)
As a result of the discontinuance of the two local Thorp banks, The
People State Bank and The Farmers Exchange Bank, a new bank to be known
as the Peoples Exchange Bank was formed last week with a new charter
issued by the State Banking Commission.
Thorp defeated the strong Gilman Baseball team here in a hard fought
game with the score being 10 to 5 at the end of the ninth inning.
The Riteway Inn is a new restaurant and ice cream parlor, which has
recently been opened upon the corner of Stanley and Washington Streets
on Highway 29. The Inn is under the supervision of John J. Harycki, its
proprietor.

50 Years Ago (1956)
Donald R. Zukowski, Edward C. Bobb and Leonard E. Propkopinski all of
Thorp, left Neillsville September 5 by chartered bus and were inducted
into the Army at Minneapolis.
The Town of Thorp for the first time had women as their election clerks.
Mrs. Oscar Isenberger and Mrs. Frank Seidl served in this capacity.
Eleanore Orzechowski, Thorp, was the first prize winner in the “baby
doll” category of the Seventeen Magazine and Save the Children
Federation annual doll making content (contest) for teenage girls.
In one of the greatest games ever played on the Thorp diamond the Thorp
Cards won the Cloverbelt Baseball League Championship over Abbotsford
Guards 5 to 4 in the 14th inning.
25 Years Ago (1981)
President Ronald Reagan spoke at a White House Rose Garden ceremony to
honor the recipients of the Young American Medal for Bravery, including
David and Robert Christie, former Thorp residents.
Joann Syryczyk, owner of the Hair Bender, received the keys to her new
beauty shop purchased from Arlene Zaborowski who recently retired from
the beauty shop business after serving in Thorp for nearly 30 years.
Temporary approval was given by the Thorp City Council September 14, to
allow the Thorp Business association to move all of the activities of
the 1982 June Dairy Days to the North Ball Park Site.
Frances Andruskiewicz shot down a 7-foot-3, 447 pound bear September 14,
near his farm three miles north of Thorp and two miles east.
10 Years Ago (1996)
Kurt Alger received his Eagle Award following an intensive Eagle Board
of Review that was held on August 1st.
